Character Name: Aurora Belle Jenkins
Character Age: Dead! She's been dead for a few decades but died at age 18.
Background: Aurora Belle is a ghost. Ghosts in her universe don't work as people traditionally think they do, but there's some similarities. The biggest difference being that when someone dies and are carted to the Afterlife, they essentially get amnesia. All they know is their name. They don't know how they died, who their family was, where and when they lived. Bits and pieces come back to these souls in their time in the Afterlife - a conversation may bring forth a memory of their favorite foods, or a piece of knowledge they didn't know they had. In that way, they can learn a bit more about themselves, but ultimately most souls in the Afterlife never learn of their origins. To make it harder to figure out their pasts, the Afterlife is made up of collectives, large mansions where the ghosts reside. People come there from all over the world, and from all over time. They reside in large mansions, housing about 200 spirits each. Rows of them stretch on in a dark plane for what seems infinity, dotting the place known as the Void as bright, welcoming beacons. If a spirit wanders too far from the mansions, they never return. New spirits arrive daily, unknowing of their former lives, but resembling themselves in their past selves usually around the time of their deaths. While no one knows how they died, several clues have been put together showing that most, if not all, of the spirits died before their time - accidents, murders, anything that wasn't a natural death like illness or old age. The spirits are of all ages and walks of life, and each house seems to hold people from the same time period, if their clothing is a clue, though new people can show up at any time. But with their near-total amnesia, other clues are hard to come by.
Time is a fluid thing in the Afterlife, especially when you have no need to eat, sleep, or anything like that. Aurora isn't sure how long she's been there, but it's been quite awhile. There's definitely spirits who've resided there longer. Like a lot of ghosts, Aurora isn't bothered by her amnesia. She's content in the Afterlife with her friends and meeting new people. Floating from mansion to mansion to visit her friends or to make new ones is alright by her, and she's goods at that. Ghosts are also granted passes to Earth, but can only do so by possessing someone there. Each mansion has a portal to Earth inside, and any ghost can go for a visit. Some go for a change of scenery, or to maybe find clues of who they used to be. But the times you are sent back to are random, and getting sent to the same one twice is almost impossible. A few of the older and more powerful residents seem to have a finer control getting to where they want to go, however, so it can happen. Some ghosts go back to earth and stay for as long as they can or some just go sightseeing. The older the ghost, the longer they can stay in a possession, and the more they can do with their hosts, like have them act to their whims. Aurora Belle is content on the occasional visit to play tourists to the whole of time and space. She's seen a lot and has a hundred stories to tell.
Aurora Belle Jenkins - OC - background part 2so_lowSeptember 6 2011, 01:39:11 UTC
It's unknown to her, but in her past life, Aurora was your typical teenager, living in the late 1970s in southern California. She had recently graduated high school and was going to head off to college, to study to be an art teacher. She was bubbly, bright and cheerful, traits which followed her to the other side. She was a well-liked and popular girl, who was a member of her school's cheerleading and softball teams, as well as the art club - her passion was for painting. She had a way of ingratiating herself with people, always ready to lend help. Aurora was the youngest of three children, with an older sister and an older brother. Her parents owned an operated a small but popular clothing boutique, where they sold their own clothing creations as well as others. The children helped work at the store as well, after school and during the summers. Aurora was never one to get into much trouble, but had a curious nature and a vivid imagination that often ran away with itself.
Tragically, Aurora died at the age of 18 when she was closing up her parents' shop one night after working. Robbers came to hit up the store, and Aurora valiantly tried to stand up to her attackers, only to be shot accidentally. Panicked, the robbers fled the scene, leaving her there to die. By the time the police were alerted, it was too late.
In the Afterlife, Aurora was just as popular and well-known as when she was alive. She introduced herself to anyone and everyone, often visiting other groups. All you have in the Afterlife is your interactions with other spirits, and she saw no reason not to make the best of it. Why not make as many friends as possible? The more you talked to someone, the more they could learn about themselves, after all. There were some items in the mansions to keep spirits busy - art supplies being one of them, so many mansions held paintings by Aurora. Most were portraits of other spirits, but some where of people and places who flickered through her memory, trying to come forth. But with what seemed like infinity ahead of them, and limited entertainment, why not try to solve the riddles that surrounded the Afterlife? A lot of other spirits were trying to figure out their time puzzle - who was from the oldest time, and the newest time periods? What were the farthest times people could reach on Earth? Did people there really have anything in common? Kim, a boy about Aurora's age and whom she'd consider her best friend, was one of the ghosts who was trying to solve these problems, and of course she couldn't resist getting involved with it too.
Aurora Belle Jenkins - OC - personality 1so_lowSeptember 6 2011, 01:40:54 UTC
Personality: Aurora Belle is an extrovert, cheerful and perky. Some definitely find her overbearing, but she's generally too sweet that one would hate her without good reason. If she does find out someone hates her, she won't hesitate to find out why to make amends. Knowing someone doesn't like her or might be mad at her upsets her greatly. However, she doesn't know when to leave well enough alone, and can make the situation worse. For the most part, though, Aurora is a kind and gentle girl who just wants to help others.
Painting has always bee her passion since she was young. Being born into an artistic family, she was encouraged and her talent was nurtured. She would help her parents in designing and creating clothing and outfits. Mostly, though, she likes to paint people and portraits, adopting an energetic and colorful style that seemed to fit her personality. Her goal was to go to school to become an art teacher. Despite everything she crammed into her schedule, Aurora always made time to fit painting in. In school, she was also a member of the cheerleading team in the fall, and on the softball team in the spring. The latter she was never very good at, but it never dulled her enthusiasm for the sport. A few of these memories have come back to her while in the Afterlife, and a lot of the time she spends not talking with friends is spent painting their portraits.
Aurora Belle is a selfless girl who will be willing to help anyone, even if it's perfectly clear she'd be in over her head. She's willing to roll up her sleeves and try anything. After all, you don't know until you've tried, right? It pains her to see people struggling or in trouble, so she'll go out of her way and get herself involved, even if she wasn't welcome or asked to help. She can get on people's nerves fast this way, but will fall all over herself apologizing.
Aurora Belle Jenkins - OC - personality 2so_lowSeptember 6 2011, 01:41:38 UTC
Despite being flighty and a busybody, Aurora is fairly intelligent. Her curious nature keeps her thinking about things, and she will won't let a problem stump her if she can help it. Sometimes her focus isn't the best, and can be easily distracted, she won't forget something. She'll come back to it at some point. In school, she was generally a B and C student, with As in arts and humanities classes.
Her nature as gotten her in trouble on Earth when visiting as she gets herself involved in other people's problems. If she possesses someone who is in trouble, she will foolishly make contact with them in order to speak with them. The world outside the Afterlife is just our normal Earth (mostly), so things like ghosts are thought of to be superstitions, things left for fiction. Imagine suddenly having a girl talking to you in your head out of nowhere, saying she's here to help! Or even going as far as taking over their bodies if she feels its what they need (but not without oodles of apologies). There's no rules saying spirits from the Afterlife shouldn't knowingly possess people, but they don't generally take well to it.
Appearance-wise, Aurora looks younger than her 18 years. While on the tall side, she has a young face, with big grey eyes. She has incredibly long curly brown hair that seems to have a life of its own. While alive, Aurora loved shopping for clothes, jewelry and make-up, and missed being able to get new things while in the Afterlife. She'd often possess girls to live vicariously all the different time periods and styles to see all the different fashions there were out there. She tends towards bright colors and very feminine looks, and will probably take well to the late-1950s style in Mayfield.
Aurora Belle Jenkins - OC - abilities/sample 1so_lowSeptember 6 2011, 01:43:12 UTC
Abilities: As a ghost, Aurora is generally invisible, and can possess people at will. This almost always goes unnoticed by the person she's chosen, but there's always those people out there who are more sensitive than others. In Mayfield, there will be a lot more. However, if she attempts to communicate, or take over their body, she will definitely be noticed. Controlling a person takes a lot of effort, but she can “push” the person to the back of their own mind, and control their actions for a short time, generally depending on what she's doing and the will of the person she's entered. An exorcist could always remove her, but Aurora would probably leave if you just asked nicely. Unless it was for your own good, of course!
As an incorporeal being, Aurora can also float through solid objects and fly. The larger the object, the more difficult it will be for her to pass through, but things like walls are a piece of cake. I'm hoping that if she regains this from while in Mayfield, she might still be able to be visible to everyone.
Sample Entry 1: 1) [Aurora might be too old by Mayfield's standards, but today she'll be showing up at the high school! She has a lot of faint memories of her own, and there's something comforting about this place. She wanders around the halls, smiling fondly, looking around at everything as if she's never seen it before. Drones are confused by the random presence of Mrs. X, but she doesn't seem to notice. If you don't look like a drone, she may approach you in between classes.]
Oh, hello! Boy, this school is amazing... Say, do you know where the art classes are? I'd like to take a look.
2) [While she doesn't remember anything about her own family, that doesn't stop Aurora from trying to fit in to her new role as wife and mother in Mayfield. Today, she's attempting to cook. The kitchen is a disaster area - recipe books are scattered, supplies and ingredients seem to smudge every inch of available counter and table top space. Aurora herself is dotted with flour, merrily mixing what might be a cake, humming to herself. Anyone entering the kitchen might notice the smell of something burning. Aurora notices too.] “Oh no! The pork chops!” [She nearly drops the mixing bowl and scrambles to the oven, waving away smoke.]
O-Oh... I'm so sorry! I really thought that... um... You're okay with the diner tonight, right? Right! It's on me this time.
3) [Post a horrible event, like Cream of the Cop: Aurora Belle will be found going door to door in the neighborhood once everything looks clear. It doesn't matter if she knows you or not, she'll be knocking, holding a tray of cookies. Don't worry, these she bought at the bakery.]
Hey! Hello. I know you don't know me, but my name's Aurora Belle, and I was just checking to see how you are. Yes, you! That whole ordeal was rough on everyone, so if there's anything I can to to help you out, please tell me. Oh, here, I've got these. Have one! [She offers up the cookies, looking hopeful.]
Aurora Belle Jenkins - OC - sample 2so_lowSeptember 6 2011, 01:44:23 UTC
Sample Entry 2: Recently, Aurora Belle was finally given a job by the town. She's tickled by the idea of having one, and being a seamstress sounds like fun. Waking up bright and early, Aurora fixes up her hair, puts on her favorite dress, and skips out the door. To someone who didn't know any better, Aurora might seem like a drone as she cheerfully greets those she passes by with a "Good morning!" She arrives at work bright and early, eager to get ready to learn her trade.
The drones at the shop seem a bit confused about her asking about learning - hadn't Mrs. X worked here for a long time? Well, that's okay. Aurora is fine with trying to learn on her own, watching the drone women at their work and studying what they do.
But there's something familiar about this. It's niggling at the back of Aurora's mind. Something familiar about these dresses being fitted on mannequins, the hemming and sizing, the patterns and supplies... Aurora turns unusually quiet as she sits down at the sewing machine, and begins to thread it, muscle memory guiding her actions. She sits back, staring at the machine quizzically. Where had she learned to do this? She never learned to do this while in Mayfield.
That only meant one thing: she already knew how to do this. That she's done it before numerous times. Some part of her still knows how to do this. This was a memory! She could sew!
Overjoyed, Aurora Belle leaps from her seat. "I remember! I can sew!", she cheers. The drone women come to a stop, staring at her in confusion. One speaks up after a moment.
