Ganta Igarashi | Deadman Wonderland | Reserved, Part 4 i_gar_ashi July 6 2011, 01:44:58 UTC

This is going to hurt, so hold my hand for a minute: Ganta fights for his friends. Deep breath; you made it. I'm well aware that I just described literally every shounen protagonist in existence, but friendship takes on a special meaning for Ganta when you consider that the whole reason he got into this mess is because he was framed for murdering his friends. Ganta will never, ever turn on his friends (unless they turn on him first (LOOKING AT YOU MINATSUKI)), refusing to do so on multiple occasions. Part of this is good old-fashioned shounen willpower, but the rest of it is just balls-out defiance: no matter what anyone says, Ganta didn't kill his friends before, and in a strange way he feels like doing so now would make him responsible for the first murder as well. The world screams at Ganta to become the murderer they all want him to be, but when push comes to shove, Ganta says FUCK YOU, WORLD.

Aaand then nearly pass out, realizing what he did. Ganta tends to undercut himself a lot; he's done some pretty amazing and heroic things during his time in DMWL, but he doesn't consider himself anything more than a tired, scared teenage boy. He tends to look for hero figures a lot: beginning with his childhood hero, Ace Man, and then moving on to Senji and Nagi, the former of whom Ganta considers to be SUPER RAD despite that fact that he is crazy and has tried to kill him on multiple occasions. Upon meeting Nagi and Karako for the first time, Ganta nearly breaks down in tears from the relief he feels at discovering adults who share the same ideals he does (read: "maybe let's not be fucking crazy").

Somewhat oddly for someone who's also pretty timid and shy, Ganta has something of a temper problem. He flips out on Shiro without giving her a chance to explain after she blows up the data chip, and gets pretty frustrated with her on more than one occasion. Despite this, he ain't too proud to beg her forgiveness when it comes to it. After losing all his friends once, Ganta gets a bit clingy: he loves Shiro, he loves his newfound friends, and he'll fight with everything he's got to protect them. No matter what Tamaki, the Red Man, Toto, or anyone else has to throw at him, Ganta is beginning to realize that nothing they've got can be worse than what he's already experienced. (In this regard, he might not entirely be correct.)

In many ways, Ganta summarizes the Mayfield experience quite well: he's an ordinary boy thrust into a horrific situation well beyond his control, and is given the choice between dying horribly or developing into the kind of person who can not only survive, but overthrow the system. IT'S MAN UP OR DIE, GANTA, and at this point Ganta Igarashi has decided he has no intention of dying.

Abilities: Ganta's Branch of Sin, as explained above, lets him shoot his blood like a gun! Concentration can increase the size and power of the bullet, particularly when Ganta is anemic: as his blood thins, it becomes more deadly, even capable of breaking the sound barrier! So, basically, the closer Ganta is to death, the better he fights. YEP.
