Character Name: Ganta Igarashi Character Series: Deadman Wonderland Character Age: 14 Background: GANTA IGARASHI's life is a never-ending cesspool of death and despair, the likes of which can only be equaled by basically everyone else in his canon. Let's get started!
Ten years ago, an event known as the "Red Hole" decimated Tokyo and leaving four-year-old Ganta Igarashi an orphan. Ganta, like many other kids who were orphaned in the earthquake, went into the care of the state and went on to have a normal, happy life as an ordinary high school student for all of... five minutes after the story starts. One day, Ganta was just chillin' in the classroom with his homies WHEN SUDDENLY some red-cloaked asshole flies up to their sixth story window and blows shit up. Ganta watches as all of his classmates and friends are butchered like cattle, and is then shot in the chest by the grinning Red Man. When he wakes up, he finds that he's being blamed for the massacre, and is shipped off to prison on death row.
YEP.
Said prison happens to be "Deadman Wonderland", a massive prison/theme park built over the ruins of Tokyo and designed to help re-stimulate the Japanese economy. Prisoners are forced to compete in horrific games of life-and-death for the amusement of Japanese citizens, and made to wear collars that will pump them full of poison unless they earn and eat antidote candy once every three days. WELCOME TO YOUR NEW LIFE, GANTA. Our dashing young hero is understandably rather miffed about the whole "falsely accused of murdering all your friends" thing, but he is dragged out of despair by this weird half-naked crazy albino girl calling herself Shiro and claiming to be his long-lost BFF! YEAH. He also befriends two other inmates: Yoh Takami, another death row prisoner with a kleptomaniacal streak, and Azami Mido, a former gang member who shows him the ropes of the prison.
After being attacked by some bullies and nearly killed by falling construction equipment, Ganta discovers that getting the shot in the chest, oddly, has an upside: he has superpowers now! So, that's awesome. Ganta finds that he now has the ability to "shoot" bullets made of his own blood out his hands. Cool! Less cool is that this doesn't really do anything about the whole "gonna die unless you get some candy" bit. To this end, Ganta enters a race in which he is pitted against some other death row prisoners, including the terrifying bully Kazumasi Kouzuma, who mocks a scared-shitless Ganta before moving on to assault Azami. Ganta, who has had JUST ABOUT ENOUGH OF THIS SHIT, discovers the courage to stand up to Kazumasi to protect Azami, earning the huge older man's wrath. YEAH, YOU'RE PRETTY MUCH SCREWED GANTA.
Except not really! Despite the fact that the race is full of death traps that brutally kill all the other participants, Ganta manages to stay alive thanks to the bumbling help of Shiro, whose clumsy "accidents" keep him away from all the traps. In the end, it's down to just Ganta, Shiro, and Kazumasi. Ganta has an opportunity to seize the prize ball and win the game, but instead uses this chance to save Shiro from falling in a spike pit, thus sealing his doom. (Kazumasi, meanwhile, falls to his death and nobody cares.)

Fortunately for Ganta, he's got someone watching out for him! Unfortunately for him it's the asshole responsible for putting him here in the first place: Tamaki Tsunenaga, Ganta's inept defense lawyer who COINCIDENTALLY ENOUGH happens to also be the Promoter of DMWL. MEET THE WORLD'S BIGGEST DOUCHEBAG, LADIES AND GENTLEMAN. Having taken an interest in Ganta's powers, Tamaki orders his informant, Yoh, to keep an eye on him. Yoh, repaying Ganta for some candy he stole from him earlier, gives Ganta a piece, saving his life. Woo! Then the Red Man shows up again. NOT WOO. Ganta attacks him and gets his ass handed to him. Also not woo!
Ganta hears that the Red Man is being kept in "G Block", so he and Shiro and Yoh head down that way to discover DMWL's secrets. After being chased by a security robot (THANKS MAKINA), they are saved by a weird guy who, like Ganta, has the ability to manipulate his blood: Senji Kyomasa! After kicking around Ganta a little (YEP) Senji explains that he, Ganta, and the Red Man are all what's known as "Deadmen": survivors of the Red Hole who, for some reason, have developed the ability to manipulate their blood. Ganta goes on to discover that DMWL's true purpose is to house Deadman and conceal them from the public and, more importantly, pit them against each other for shits and giggles.
Ganta finds that he's been entered in a "Carnival Corpse": a battle between him and another Deadman. It is, in fact, Senji, a.k.a. "Crow". By some miracle, Ganta manages to win, and earns Senji's respect in the process! Yay! Then he learns that losers of the Carnival lose a limb or an organ, and watches as Senji's eyeball is graphically ripped out on TV. NOT YAY. Meanwhile, Yoh finds out that the Red Man who killed all of Ganta's friends is, in fact, none other than Shiro's split personality. YEP.
Ganta's next opponent in the Carnival Corpse is Minatsuki Tamaki. Aww, isn't she just an adorable little oooHHH MY GOD WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. YEP. Minatsuki is a manipulative psychopath! She is also, however, Yoh's little sister, and the whole reason he got into DMWL in the first place. By using Yoh as a human shield, Minatsuki almost kills Ganta, but Ganta manages to knock her out with a headbutt and claim victory! Woo!
Eeeexcept for that whole "loser loses organs" part. Even though she tried to kill him, Ganta is a TRUE GENTLEMAN and TRUE GENTLEMEN do not let ladies get their kidneys ripped out (again). Ganta runs off to go prevent the punishment, only for some weird lady to fly out of nowhere and jump-kick him in the face. YEP.
The lady introduces herself as Karako Koshio, and she is joined by her companion, Nagi Kengamine. The two explain that they are the leaders of an organization called "Scar Chain" made up of Deadmen who are out to escape DMWL and expose it for the gross violation of human rights it is! Eat your heart out, Arthur Sinclair. The two proceed to hack the punishment lottery, making it so that the body part that Minatsuki has to lose is her hair. Woohoo!
Ganta is initially reluctant to help Scar Chain, as they seem to be too relaxed for a resistance group, but after learning Nagi's horrific backstory, he agrees to help the group with their plan. Things don't exactly go according to plan, though, as Scar Chain's intelligence officer Rokuro Bundo proves to be a traitor. The "data chip" that supposedly contains evidence of DMWL's wrongdoings is, in fact, a bomb! Nagi manages to radio for help after discovering the truth, and Shiro picks up, managing to intercept Ganta and destroy the chip before it can harm him. Unfortunately for her, Ganta does not know the chip is a fake, and is understandably pretty pissed off at her for blowing it up! He yells at her to leave, driving her away in tears, before going to regroup with the rest of Scar Chain.

With Nagi captured by the enemy, Karako is left in charge. Rokuro enters in a frothing rage, demanding to know who fucked up his perfect plan, and Ganta realizes that Shiro had once again saved his life. WAY TO GO, GANTA. Scar Chain is saved by Senji, who agrees to teach a tearful Ganta how to fight with his Branch of Sin. Karako attempts to rescue Nagi, but after a drunken Shiro interferes, the two both find themselves captured by the Undertakers: the mad priest Genkaku and his companions, whose weapons are geared to negate the Deadmen's powers.
Ganta and the rest of Scar Chain RUSH TO THE RESCUE, only for Nagi to emerge from the shadows! Turns out he's completely "sane" now, by which I mean bugfuck crazy, having regained the memories of what really happened to his wife and daughter. (They died. Badly.) Nagi goes on a rampage, killing Undertakers and Scar Chain members alike, but together Karako and Ganta manage to snap him out of it. Hooray! Then Genkaku blows a hole in his stomach. Dammit! Enraged, Ganta launches a massive blast at Genkaku, and thanks to Nagi's dying attack, it connects, killing Genkaku. (Supposedly.)
Nagi dies, but the rest of Scar Chain manage to escape, offering to let Ganta come with them. Inspired by Nagi's sacrifice, however, Ganta refuses, deciding to remain in DMWL until he can hunt down the Red Man and avenge his fallen friends.
Yeah that doesn't really work out... so well.......
Personality: GANTA IGARASHI is simultaneously the lamest and most badass character in his canon. When we first meet Ganta, he is an ordinary strappin' young lad; a bit of a dork, but otherwise totally normal. Watching all your friends die, getting blamed for it, getting thrown in death row psycho prison, and being made to fight for your life on numerous occasions, however, has a way of beating the dork out of a boy.
That's not to say that Ganta's dweebiness is completely gone, of course. He is still pretty dweeby! Surrounded by the crazy people of DMWL, Ganta sticks out like a sore thumb: he's nervous, awkward, and completely out of place among the other prisoners. Ganta spends most of his early time in DMWL alternating between Brooding Like A Boss and crying like a little girl, which is really kinda understandable given the circumstances of his arrival. He's something of a fraidy-cat as well, as shown by his initial willingness to submit to Kouzuma's bullying for fear of getting his shit kicked just, fuckin', all over the place.
It's when Kouzuma turns on Azami, however, that Ganta starts proving his higher qualities: he is very, very brave! Note that "brave" should not be confused with "fearless". Despite the fact that he's scared out of his wits, Ganta finds the courage time and again to stand up to enemies bigger, stronger, and all-around more hardass mofo than he is. His bravery is motivated primarily by friendship and loyalty; Ganta is willing to take a lot of shit himself, but he doesn't like seeing other people put in the same situations.

This is going to hurt, so hold my hand for a minute: Ganta fights for his friends. Deep breath; you made it. I'm well aware that I just described literally every shounen protagonist in existence, but friendship takes on a special meaning for Ganta when you consider that the whole reason he got into this mess is because he was framed for murdering his friends. Ganta will never, ever turn on his friends (unless they turn on him first (LOOKING AT YOU MINATSUKI)), refusing to do so on multiple occasions. Part of this is good old-fashioned shounen willpower, but the rest of it is just balls-out defiance: no matter what anyone says, Ganta didn't kill his friends before, and in a strange way he feels like doing so now would make him responsible for the first murder as well. The world screams at Ganta to become the murderer they all want him to be, but when push comes to shove, Ganta says FUCK YOU, WORLD.
Aaand then nearly pass out, realizing what he did. Ganta tends to undercut himself a lot; he's done some pretty amazing and heroic things during his time in DMWL, but he doesn't consider himself anything more than a tired, scared teenage boy. He tends to look for hero figures a lot: beginning with his childhood hero, Ace Man, and then moving on to Senji and Nagi, the former of whom Ganta considers to be SUPER RAD despite that fact that he is crazy and has tried to kill him on multiple occasions. Upon meeting Nagi and Karako for the first time, Ganta nearly breaks down in tears from the relief he feels at discovering adults who share the same ideals he does (read: "maybe let's not be fucking crazy").
Somewhat oddly for someone who's also pretty timid and shy, Ganta has something of a temper problem. He flips out on Shiro without giving her a chance to explain after she blows up the data chip, and gets pretty frustrated with her on more than one occasion. Despite this, he ain't too proud to beg her forgiveness when it comes to it. After losing all his friends once, Ganta gets a bit clingy: he loves Shiro, he loves his newfound friends, and he'll fight with everything he's got to protect them. No matter what Tamaki, the Red Man, Toto, or anyone else has to throw at him, Ganta is beginning to realize that nothing they've got can be worse than what he's already experienced. (In this regard, he might not entirely be correct.)
In many ways, Ganta summarizes the Mayfield experience quite well: he's an ordinary boy thrust into a horrific situation well beyond his control, and is given the choice between dying horribly or developing into the kind of person who can not only survive, but overthrow the system. IT'S MAN UP OR DIE, GANTA, and at this point Ganta Igarashi has decided he has no intention of dying.
Abilities: Ganta's Branch of Sin, as explained above, lets him shoot his blood like a gun! Concentration can increase the size and power of the bullet, particularly when Ganta is anemic: as his blood thins, it becomes more deadly, even capable of breaking the sound barrier! So, basically, the closer Ganta is to death, the better he fights. YEP.
