Ohhhhh, awesome. I love Sayu's determination here and the way she tries to emulate Raito while still being herself. And the last bit is actually pretty chilling, in an understated way! Really good fic.

Thank you. :) I think that she's probably got some traits in common with Light, even if she's not as adept with them as he is.

I'm with Sayu, I also want to know what Mello did to get together with the mafia, to "to have such authority over the thugs "!

Mello really gets to the heart of the matter by zeroing on Sayu's second-best status, and he does it in a very sympathetic way, not angry or condescending, just honest. The intimacy of the conversation, with no one around and Sayu pretty much forced to focus on the exchange and respond, gives it an eerie kind of feeling. Sayu has to act alone, maybe for the first time, constantly evaluating and negotiating her presence and reactions... it's all very tricky for her.

I loved the chocolate bit. It's weird how fics make me feel a lot more... inclined toward Mello, than the original manga/anime. Weird! :X

Canonically, he delivered the head of a rival to the mob he headed, IIRC. Not sure when he did that, but there was also a transatlantic journey at some point.

I wrote another fic with a similar premise and I noticed the common point of being under somebody else's shadow (although it is completely theoretical on Sayu's part as it's not suggested in canon, of course). Here, also, she's pretty much forced to think a little more because she doesn't know how dangerous he really could be.

The chocobit came out of nowhere but I really enjoyed the image. You don't like Mello? I guess that fanworks tend to explore a little deeper, especially sides we don't see of certain characters.

On the topic of living in someone's shadow -- there is a scene in canon that I absolutely adore, when Sayu has Light help her with homework (quadratic equations?) and then she's running off, and he's like, shouldn't you do at least one on your own, and she's all, no thanks! It's nice because it suggests that she had her ways of "using" her brother get what she wanted, to negotiate being a younger sister to a brilliant brother ( ... )

Yes! In fact, I really like the relationship she seems to have with Light, too, especially because she's pretty much the only person he seems to have any affection for. And she's probably got a lot in common with him. More than we actually see.

Yeah, definitely. We don't see her much when that was going on until Soichiro picks her up and it would possibly have been nice to view her in the context of that, because as it is, she's just collateral in the eyes of Mello and the mafia. Thank you! :D

I know what you mean, I have the same thing with Death Note and Light, especially. It's amazing what you can pick up with a rewatch/reread. I guess because then you're on better terms with everything.
