Ever since I saw Heechul kiss his bandmates, Ohmiya made more sense.

As I've mentioned a few posts back, I am getting back into the KPOP fandom which I had left after Arashi took my soul. But it's not like I was that into KPOP before. It was a few months long sort of love affair. Well, anyway, the reasons for this "comeback" are FT Island and CN Blue. But that's not exactly the point of this entry.

The first time I knew about this whole fanservice thing that's common between KPOP and JPOP, it weirded me out so much. I was like "wtf! are you gay?" and couldn't even watch Ohmiya. LOL Now that I've been in fandom too long, it feels like a part of everyday life to even care about skinship and guys hugging and kissing each other. Or so I thought.
Being back in the KPOP world, like I said, I couldn't help but come across random videos of Korean idols including Super Junior. I was watching "Good Daddy", a reality show which Hongki of FTI participated in with SuJu's Kim Heechul, when I found a video showing all of Heechul's kissing scenes with his bandmates. My jaw dropped, and I couldn't close my mouth for a couple of minutes staring at the computer screen. The kisses were so real. As in real lips to lips kisses. Gosh was it disturbing! Although I must admit, those kisses were pretty damn hot! LOL

I thought I've seen the best or worst (whichever way you look at it) of fanservice with Ohmiya all the while thinking the world had stopped making sense. And then Heechul gave me a slap on the face.

I don't know. Maybe I'm just not used to it yet, but though I also find it amusing (sort of), KPOP fanservice just weirds me out more than JPOP fanservice ever did/does. It may also be due to the notion that homosexuality does not seem to exist in Korean culture. I'm not saying there are no gays in Korea, but it's one of the countries that are not really open to homosexuality, right?

I may sound defensive, but before you get me wrong, I am not against the fanservice that Korean idols do nor do I mean to compare it to the Japanese way of doing it. It's not a bad thing in my opinion, really. I think it just needs more time (and exposure) getting used to. Although, honestly, I like the subtle fanservice than outright kissing in front of the fans. :D

And while we're on this topic, I'm not ashamed to admit that I still don't understand the whole fanservice thing completely nor understand why the fangirls (including me) love to see their straight (or not) idols kissing and hugging and whatever. So, if you could reply with your opinions below, I would be so happy to be enlightened. :D What was your initial reaction to fanservice? What is it that you like about fanservice? Anything, really. I just want to know what you think.

And here's the video I was talking about if you're curious.
