So, hockey is starting up again and after last year's merger we all need to actually try out for the teams. This year we have 3 teams in the Sydney Metro League in divisions 3, 5 and 6 (of 6 total divisions).
When I first started playing for the ML6 team 2 years ago, I played goal keeper and still played on the field with the grass team in another comp. Last year I played on the field for the ML6 team.
This year I've been trying out for both the field and goals as my coach would kind of like me to play goals for a variety of reasons. I had thought about trying to play for 2 teams, ie one in goals, one on the field but it turns out you're not allowed to do that any more in this competition. Currently I don't feel skilled enough in either goal or field to warrant being placed in the ML5 team anyway. SO I kind of have to choose which one I'd rather do.
Goal keeping is satisfying in that you ultimately stop the goals... or fail and contribute to your team potentially losing (I know, it has to go through 10 other people first - but I wear a hell of a lot of padding!). The field offers a higher level of fitness, and last year while playing on the field, I lost 14kg (well, probably half of that, but you get the point). I'm also not bad at playing - I could be better, but that' what training is for - and really I could get better at either.
There is a possibility a 4th team in another competition could come about and I could play on the field for the 4th team in the other Ryde comp and as goals for the ML6 team. So while that sounds like a great solution, it then throws up a whole other set of conundrum-making-thoughts.
Wonderboyf is, as ever, wonderful about it and supportive - he'd be happy if I played one or both teams and claims my choice has nothing to do with him. He's wrong, because if I play 2 teams, although most games are on Sunday's, there is still an increased likelihood of playing games on other nights etc and me generally being very busy with potential to get run down.
Wonderboyf is mainly worried about me breaking myself before our trip to the snow - have to say, I agree. My knees have been sore for a week since last week's training and fitness session and I'm not sure whether the field or the goals are better or worse for my knees.
I have one last grading game this weekend (because I can't make it next weekend) and then the season starts.
*sigh*
I don't know. And if anyone asks which I prefer or which one I enjoy more - you'll get a blank look - I don't know. I've been trying them both and neither is being a front runner.
And trainings are at 9pm on Thursday nights - how evil is that?!
Oh well, sleep is the important thing right now - no decision making required quite yet, but it's looking.
