Yeah, messed-up as he is, Dean Winchester is still needed. I doubt we'll see anything like this on the show, as unflinching and painful and direct - "gird your loins" "he means grow a pair"

Well done!

Thank you! Yes, Dean is definitely needed, and more, he needs to be needed. His life is hard and he's hardened in response--he needs something to push against to keep himself standing.

NICE.

Sam’s kindness was starting to fray at the edges, finally wearing away to reveal the bloody bone beneath, and Dean was perversely glad.

That analogy is awesomesauce. I read it like 5 times. Lol.

Expectations. Dean should have been furious, railing against these new constrictions, fighting yet one more pressure in his life, one more demand, one more captain and commander shouting orders in his ears.

He wasn’t angry. He was relieved.

*incoherent flail* YES. THIS. I ALWAYS think this about Dean. Because how can a person bother to keep going if no one expects them to? All he had was to protect Sam, and once Sam died, *poof*. Dean with no purpose = something I never like to see.

The weight of the world may be heavy, but it's what keeps him grounded.

:D I'm glad you liked that analogy. It felt right.

Yes, I've always felt this way about Dean, too. He is exactly the opposite of a loner. His entire life has been in service to others, with his family and his brother being paramount. And feeling that he isn't useful anymore--that's the worst thing that can happen to him.

The weight of the world may be heavy, but it's what keeps him grounded.

Wow, I really, really love that phrasing. ♥

*giggles*

Me too. Actually, right after I wrote it I thought maybe I should write it down somewhere I won't lose it. ;-)

I repeat: VERY NICE.

"Sam rolled his eyes. Dean was both pissed as hell and blindingly happy to see the bitchiness back. Sam’s sweetness had finally found its limit. About fucking time."

This is pretty much awesome as all get out. I think Dean is happy to have any show of emotion from Sam after that long period of nothingness. However, it is a sad state of affairs when Sam rolling out the bitchface makes Dean happy. *gives Dean pie*

Once again, this is very, very nice.

Dean just...doesn't know how to accept kindness, I think. :( It's such a foreign thing to him. Sam in this story is truly just trying to be supportive, to give Dean the space he needs, and Dean sees it as Sam not needing him, not trusting him to do his job. Despite how well they know and love each other, miscommunication still plagues these boys.

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the story.

Nice! Dean does seem to need someone to keep him in line. Yay Sam for putting up with him, and Castiel for finally waking Dean up. Lots of favorite lines:

Sam’s kindness was starting to fray at the edges, finally wearing away to reveal the bloody bone beneath, and Dean was perversely glad.

A simple salt-and-burn with an out-of-the-way grave? Yet somehow there were claws in there, too, silver-white in a patch of moonlight, and then thin red lines appeared across Sam’s cheek like a party trick from a malevolent magician.

He could have avoided it if he’d been acting like the man his father had trained, Dean Winchester the hunter, instead of the shattered shell the Pit had left of him.

♥ Dean needs to know that he is needed, and that's what Castiel gave him. ::squeezes them together in a big mushy ball of love::

Thank you! I'm glad you liked those lines. (I was very fond of the "party trick" one.)

I don't have the appropriate context (yet; torrents are downloading as we speak), but I like this.

For some reason I, so far, seem to like Dean much more than I like Sam...

I'm definitely a Deangirl, but I do love Sam too. He acts like a bit of a prick in some of the early episodes, though. But I can understand where he's coming from, too.
