So. Family reunion today. I get to talking with one of my cousins. She's a pretty cool girl--we didn't use to have much to talk about, but she's mellowed out a lot in the past few years, since she's had kids, and we strangely have a lot more in common now even though I am still unmarried and childless ( Read more... )

Ah, lol. I know how you feel. I'm staying with a family right now in California, and they're lovely, lovely people, and we have many things we like in common, but I asked what was the last recent movie they saw and it was New Moon. And the books are in good place in the bookcase in the living room. Really not my thing, but, well.

Oh, man, family. I have relatives who are really in the Left Behind series, too, and I keep my reaction to myself, but in my head it's all "Really? REALLY?"

Well, she likes supernatural. She's not a lost cause!

My feeling with books like Twilight etc is that the people that made them so popular tend to fall into two categories, just as they do with the other godawful but popular books out there:

a)people who don't read very much (also, preteens, who lack the life experience and critical thinking skills an adult has) so they don't really know how awful it is. It's like if you've only ever had bad wine or chocolate. You won't know what you're missing until you've been exposed to the good stuff.

b)People who are looking for some mindless entertainment, and for whatever reason, they are unaffected by the things that make me want to throw the book across the room.

So- maybe suggest better books? Get her hooked on something worthy of fannishness ;-p ?

I think those two categories are pretty accurate, though it doesn't quite explain just how RABID the Twilight fans are. (And how BAD those books somehow manage to me. I mean, the writing alone...) And my cousin thinks the writer is "great." D:

Mmm, chocolate. I bought some Godiva lately. I'll never be able to taste Hershey chocolate again. (Not that I liked it to begin with.) For a long time I thought that I didn't like chocolate, but the fact was that I had just never had good chocolate. Now I have and I crave it like anything.

There's a chocolate shop in Santa Cruz that spoiled me forever and ever in regards to chocolate, but since it's now 300 miles away, I just have to make do ( ... )

Heh, yeah, finding out that somebody is a Twilight fan feels like learning something dirty about them that you wish you didn't know.

*sigh* Yeah, I know, my fellow Sunday school teacher adored the books and couldn't understand why I thought they were terrible.

I got stared at when I said at work "I didn't like the first book, why would I go see the movies?"

Oh, yeah, I had that at my old workplace, too. A couple of my coworkers were talking about going to see the first movie at midnight, and I made a DX face, and they were weirded out and maybe a tiny bit offended. I felt kinda bad. Not really though.

At least your sister in law didn't have FRONT ROW SEATS for the Smallville panel at Comic Con and give them up after it was over because she "never watches that Supernatural show anyway."

And she never thought that Jensen Ackles guy was all that cute when he was on Smallville. I mean, what the heck???

So I do sympathize. :)

OMG WUT. D: That is definitely worthy of dismay.

I am completely weirded out by people who do not find Jensen at least attractive. What, are they from a different planet? ;)
