I'm not connected too much in fandom, and my friends haven't discussed this much, so I don't know what the overall tone is, but I think that discussing things like this helps to end ignorance and prevent this from happening again. As long as the discussion takes a polite tone, stopping to calm down and step away from the author herself-at the very least after the initial wave of anger-this whole thing could turn into something great, possibly helping many people realize that they've been doing things that harm others. I don't know how the author is reacting to all of this, but she is in a position where she could show that our fandom is a wonderful place where people can communicate, or a place where the crazies hide out. I'm really hoping she'll take the road that makes her an example of apologizing in a timely manner, without the world tearing its hair out.
To make an American celebrity example, I hope she'll Letterman approach, and not the Tiger Woods one.

But if she can't, I hope that the rest of fandom can have good discussions about this issue, anyway. I think we are moving toward that direction. I hope we can keep going.
