Okay, someone needs to gives those boys hugs. All of them, but especially Cas and Dean. And then kick them in the pants and explain some things to them.
Look, you guys. Yes, God exists. Surprise! You were right along, Castiel. You were right to believe. He did bring you back and put the boys on the plane. You were right all along. GO YOU, YOU'RE THE LITTLE ANGEL THAT COULD AND YOU'RE AWESOME.
So, no, He's not going to interfere further. I'm not at all surprised. Not only because it wouldn't be good storytelling to solve the biggest seasonal arc ever with a literal Deus ex Machina, but also because that isn't how life works. Things suck and evil exists and people get hurt and God doesn't come down in a shiny chariot and fix everything. (Except in very, very specific circumstances, mostly in the Old Testament.)
One of the biggest themes of the season, nay, of the whole SHOW, is Free Will. Yay Free Will! Free Will Is Awesome! Right? Well, you wanna know why evil exists in the world?
BECAUSE OF FREE WILL.
Free will means that people get to pick what they want to do. And sometimes those are evil things. Ooops! ::covers mouth with hand, gives you the wide eyes:: I JUST LET OUT THE BIG SECRET.
(If I sound overly flippant and dismissive about this, I'm sorry, I really don't mean to. I was molested as a kid and I've spent a lot a lot a lot of time thinking about this, reading about it, writing longish essays and papers, all that, to reconcile to myself how there can be a good God and a bad world at the same time. I still believe in God--good, loving, omniscient, all-powerful, all that stuff--and I've never not, so that might tell you something about my conclusions.)
But then there's the flip side of Free Will. There are the people who choose to do good things. Why do you think the SPN God brought back Cas and protected Dean and Sam?
BECAUSE THAT'S HOW THE APOCALYPSE IS GONNA GET STOPPED.
God already did everything He needed to do. He's not going to intervene again because HE DOESN'T HAVE TO.
Omg what a weird thought.
I really believe that is how life works for now, until God does come down in a shiny chariot and fix everything (in the real Apocalypse at the end of the real world, not this fake Apocalypse started by dick angels, of course). Evil people do evil things and good people do good things, and God answers prayers through the arms of His servants on earth.
Meaning: You.
And me.
We are the answer to each other's prayers, in almost all cases.
I really believe that.
just_ruth wrote a fantastic little ficlet for my party that was a tiny bitty coda to 5.14, where Dean comes down to the panic room after praying so desperately, finds Cas in the room helping Sam, and realizes that this is all the answer he's getting. This is all the help that's coming. A broken-hearted angel and an ex-blood junkie with puppy eyes.
And you know what? They're all the world needs.
Anyway, that's how I see it. I'm not angry at Kripke for this turn, nor am I angry at the SPN God, though He's still pretty frigging far from the God I believe in. This is exactly how the story ought to go and I can't wait to see what happens next.
Maybe later I'll squee some about the other awesome things in this ep. But I wanted to say that right away while it was fresh in my brain.
