This is less awesome in the contemporary sense and more awesome in the original sense, as in full of awe or awe-inspiring.

Roanoke F4 Tornado Footage

I'm currently working hard on my Sweet Charity fic for sparkyjoe. She wanted a story about Dean and Sam facing a tornado from someone who has grown up in the Midwest and understands exactly what it's like ( Read more... )

I haven't looked at the footage yet, but given that my family and I live in the Midwest, we'll see if I ever do - I don't particularly need to spend my nights imagining a twister coming through my parents' house.

We've been lucky; we're pretty far on the edge of tornado territory, being in Wisconsin, but ever since they installed a siren near our house not long after we moved in, there have been a couple of warnings a summer. All four of us (and our two dogs) end up trooping down into the basement and curling up on the sleeping bags and thermarests we store down there. At least once the siren went off late enough in the evening we all just fell asleep down there!

Oddly enough, the only tornado in our area that I can think of which actually caused damage to something more than a few corn fields happened within just a couple of days of our moving to Wisconsin. It hit on the other side of the city from us, luckily, but we saw the damage later. It is absolutely amazing/shocking/horrifying how much damage on of those things can do.

Thanks so much for sharing the story of the manufacturing plant. For all the people in the world who live in areas where natural disasters are common (i.e. just about everywhere), it's amazing how many people aren't prepared for them, either due to lack of resources, nothing they can do, or simply not caring. It's always nice, therefore, to hear about the people who have figured out what to do to make a difference, and have done it, and have saved lives in the process. Let's just hope the rest of the country takes note and follows suit!

Thanks for you stories. It's such a visceral Midwestern experience, tornado season, listening to the siren, going to down to your basement to wait.

And yes, there are people in the world who care about their employees. That story makes me feel warm and good. ♥
