Major layoffs/demotions/job reassignments at work last week, out of nowhere. Am contemplating major career/life change. Is difficult when your job has become your identity.
I don't want to stay at Apple and work with a large team on an office suite for the rest of my life (even if it is the worlds coolest multitouch office suite), commuting an hour each way, so I should probably find something else to do. I will probably take some time off after I leave though. Hence vision quest.
Sounds reasonable to me. Have people given you trouble about leaving during a recession? Because I keep hearing that, but this is hardly the Great Depression just yet. And if it's about to be, all the more reason to get a better-fitting job while you can, I say.
All that to say -- vision quest: I'm in. Where does one have those nowadays? Do you wander the subway instead of the forest? Or does it depend on the kind of vision you want?
Well I decided this for sure like a week ago and haven't told many people. It is not like I am running around telling everyone I am thinking of leaving my job in over half a year. So no one's harassed me about it. But also, most of my friends are highly skilled bay area software people and the job situation for us is actually fairly rosy. If I can't find a job in the city, there is a good chance I can probably just go back to work for apple on a slightly cooler project for slightly more money. But that is not an adventure!
I don't really know where one has vision quests these days. I was talking to Matt, who will hopefully be leaving grad school around then about traveling for at least a little while. But probably I will try to start a company of some sort. Or possibly The Company .
