“I’m really looking forward to taking Tony on this redemptive arc, where instead of just buying back good favor he earns it back. He’s got some blood on his hands both literally and figuratively. He’s made a lot of right moves and a lot of wrong moves and he’s got a lot of amends to make. I’m looking forward to Tony, the man, becoming a stand up guy again. I’m going to grind him down into the dirt and smash him like a car compactor. He’ll be put through a crucible and we’ll see, when you destroy everything he is, when you take everything away, what’s left? Who is the man left standing? Is he somebody with a life worth living? Someone worth admiring? Someone worth reading about?”

- Matt Fraction, on Invincible Iron Man

Just read this quote, and oh god yes please. This is exactly how I feel, so I'm super excited about seeing where this goes. I think Tony does need to be redeemed, but not in a lame "Oh we can't have Iron Man look like a fascist anymore" way or a way that cheapens what he has gone through or why he did what he did.

He needs to be completely broken down to his essential parts - as I talked about in my last post, it's the only way to get through to him at this point. He's built up a (metaphorical) armor, so he doesn't have to face himself anymore... but with a character like Tony, he's at his most interesting when he's forced to face himself. It's kind of why I'm so into him.

So I'm hoping Fraction follows through on this. We'll see.

Oh, and Ezekiel Stane has an enormous fucking crush on Tony. It's hilarious. Too bad he's a sociopath.
