Our little family flew to Puerto Rico on Jan 31st.
I chose PR (despite husband's reluctance) since the tickets were relatively inexpensive, flight was short, and we had pleasant memories from before traveling there when i was around 6 or 7 months pregnant.
Now we returned, all 3 of us, and hit the beach already by dinnertime, excited to spend the remaining hours of 2013 on the sand and under the starry sky. As soon as we checked into an apartment located literally on Isla Verde beach, we went out, looking for an adventure. I have no idea where the next 3-5 hours went because without planning anything we ended up discovering some heart-warming and endearing beach parties with great music, fireworks, "bengalskie ogni", families (both American and Puerto Rican), and kids of all ages. Our kiddo was enjoying herself even more than her tired parents. This was the 1st time she stayed up way past midnight, with all three of us hugging and kissing at midnight. What a moment - i will never forget it!
Looks like my body decided to also never forget, because as i realized later at a Santa Barbara emergency visit to a doc., i managed to pull a muscle. I guess my dream plan of going clubbing and partying with my daughter is out of the question; its hard enough to keep up to her already.
Next morning and every other morning (with very few exceptions) for the next 3 weeks, i rose at 5 am. These were unusual and exciting events in my life, to see as many sun rises, and the joy of it will easily last me for a while!
If you are going to PR during the holidays expect-rough sailing. If you want calmness, it's just not gonna happen. The island of Culebra becomes a zoo during the holidays and a place where Puerto Ricans themselves vacation and party all through January's beginning. Around January 5, the locals celebrate Three Kings Day, (baby Jesus visited by 3 Kings with gifts and offerings). My advice, stay away!
I guess i decided to just rely on our memories for orientation and thought we could all go with the flow as the vacation unfolds itself. As my daughter exclaimed one day, "Mama, you are adventurous!"
(No, detka, i thought to myself. Mama used to be adventurous...now she is clearly just nuts!!)
The thrilling, roller-coaster ride of the next 3 weeks was just getting started.
