I have never run into (figuratively, that is) so many dogs as I have since moving here to the semi-boonies. During my time here I have come to a few conclusions about dog owners. Now I'll freely admit that they certainly don't apply to all dog owners. They may not apply much to dog owners in cities. Hell, they may only apply to dog owners living just outside the southern edge of the second largest city on Vancouver Island. But they certainly do seem to be near universal traits around here.
1) Dog owners don't like to have their dogs trained. Either that or they all think that they are master trainers who don't need the help of no stinking professionals or books. Apparently it's in their DNA. Someone needs to tell them about mutations.
2) No matter how untrained and ill behaved the dog, there's never any reason to have it on a leash, especially if the owner is around because they just know that their dog would never misbehave in front of them. (By the way, I've noticed this same blindness on the part of many parents toward their children.)
3) The dog may not have responded the first 36 times the owner yelled at it, but it's always worth trying for 37, because dogs just so look forward to the beating that they'll inevitably receive when they finally get back within arm's reach.
Now some of you dog owners out there might be thinking, "Pshaw! There's a cat-lover for you!", but I love both cats and dogs. Before Shadow happened to wander her way into our lives and our hearts we were planning on getting a dog and had even bought books on their care and training.
But if you're not willing to have your dog trained and give it the attention it needs and craves then you're not fit to have a dog. Period.
