Musical Interlude - Summertime

Jun 01, 2011 12:07

That song - very appropriate in this time of year, for more than sun, weather and season related reasons - is an ABSOLUTE GEM!
Written by George Gershwin in 1935 for the Opera "Porgy and Bess," it goes through times flawlessly. I could listen to it every day and never feel as if it's an almost hundred year old song. The melody, a million times musically explored and revisited, by so many talented musicians just doesn't age.

There are not one version (that I know) of that song which I don't like.
Listen... Don't you want to just close your eyes and let yourself be gently rocked by that jazzy soothing melody?... It feels like a lullaby. Even when it's pushed towards the edge of meths-inspired rock arrangments by the strings of Jimi Hendrix' guitar and the raspy, enthralling voice of Janis Joplin (one of my FAVORITE versions ever btw!... although the Joni Mitchell's one, with Herbie Hancock at the piano and Stevie Wonder at the harmonica is also to die for... too bad there's this nice at first but then soon unnerving wave sound during almost the entire track in the vid...)

But seriously. Isn't music one of the BEST things in the world?

There's no need to dwell endlessly on what kind of blissful thrill it triggers.
Nothing to say at this point.

Juts LISTEN. And ENJOY! :)

Warning: I LOVE Jazz. Very, very much. And this post contains a LOT of that... So, walk away now if this is not your Vicodin. No offense will be taken! But if you do stay and bask in the groovy sound of it, please do tell which version you like the most.

thanks.
