The tonys, the finals, and the best of mike myers

Jun 16, 2008 00:40

So i was gonna go over to my friend's place tonight to watch Boston-LA game 5, but just before i left i realized that the Tonys were on, and there is no chance in hell that those guys would want to flip back and forth between the tonys and the game (lest they miss a possession or a higlight).

"Hey man -cough-, im not feeling real well so i think im just gonna stay in tonight and hydrate so i don't get sick"

So im flippin back and forth between the tonys and the game in the discomfort of my own shithole, and then the unthinkable happened: Both of the shows i was watching went to commercial! Luckily for me, my elbow nudged the remote control and the channel changed to the best of mike myers on some cable network...awesome. I was trying to figure out how to manage the tv so that i didn't miss any plays OR any performances; i ended up deciding that because performances happened less often than plays did (although plays are unexpectedly few and far between when watching basketball on tv) that performances would get precedence. Luckily for me, I had a little birdie to tell me when performances started (even though she didn't help me out until like HALFWAY through the show). Thanks anyway Cam J.

Here is my commentary on the tonys, the finals, and the best of mike myers:

The Tonys: There were a great deal more worthy musicals this year than i had imagined before turning these awards on. Easily the best performance of the night came from a musical i had never heard of before called "In the Heights". It gripped my attention relentlessly with a performance of the song "96,000," which was a song based out of the Barrio and followed what a few of its inhabitants would do if they won 96,000 dollars in the lottery. It ended on a four part harmony of course, with a little reggatone groove thrown in for some spice (and it proved to be a VERY tasty addition). Needless to say, this is my next cd purchase. "In the Heights" pretty much went on to own the tonys with 13 nominations and 4 wins, including best musical (if you're nominated for a tony that you need to win, best musical is it). The revivals of broadway of 2008 were also quite spectacular, with the exception of Grease, which just wasn't doing it for me. One of the highlights of the night was the host of the show, Whoopi (no last named required really), who is always hilarious.

The finals: As was expected of this game, the Lakers won, to bring the series to a 3-2 nailbiter. As was NOT expected, the Lakers held a 19 point lead in the first quarter, and the celtics came back to tie it (and even take the lead for a bit), until the end of the third quarter when the Lakers came right back to grab a 14 point lead again. Of course, Boston came back AGAIN to tie it up, with the lakers eventually winning a neck-and-neck contest at the end of the fourth quarter. The win was essentially clinched when Kobe Bryant (the league mvp) forced a turnover and ended up with a dunk on the otherside of the court. Despite this clinch, Eddie House STILL put down a three pointer when boston was down by six in the final seconds (bringing their deficit to 3, and a one-possession fix). The Lakers hung on though with Derek Fisher's free throws, with a final score of 103-98. This was one game of basketball that will keep me watching basketball for a few years.

The best of Mike Myers: I'm just going to write a personal note to mikey for this one:

"Thanks for taking care of the commercials, you funny son of a bitch. I'm probably not gonna see Guru (Austin Powers 4), but good luck with it."

So that was my sunday evening, and what proved to be the most exciting night of television i have had in a very long time.

"If I had 96000 i wouldn't go on no shopping spree
I'd find the next business school and pay the entrance fee
then you better hope you're still friends with me"
