Printing, Open Office and HP

Tonight I wanted to print a word document my wife had received on her email account, using the Mac.  Sounds fairly straight forward, save the attachment and go for a printer.  The Mac did use Bonjour and found our HP printer (good work HP!) and I successfully printed a legible document, albeit at a very high quality setting, which is probably my fault.  I decided to pull down the drivers for the printer (for OSX) while I opened the document in open office, after several attempts of avoiding using the Word trial that is pre-installed (remind me later).  Anyway I took the MacBook upstairs (open not closed) to find it had crashed, hung, frozen completely.  I had to power cycle it (Glad I didn't have to pull the battery out!)

After the power cycle I decided to grab the file from my wife's account and put it onto my desktop so I could print it from there (still in OSX).
Problem is that I was thinking like windows, and I wanted to access her desktop folder using my account (using Terminal).  The desktop is a restricted folder, and being new to Mac I don't know of a way around the problem (I really didn't want to consult the web for such a menial task).  I ended up using a memory stick to transfer the file to a windows PC, since the Mac, was pulling drivers for the printer and I wanted to get the task out of the way.

So within 2 weeks of having a Mac I've made it hang!  Fantastic - Mac isn't so unlike windows as people make out.
