ozark memories
A towering puff of clouds
rolled into our sky,
made shade from sunlight
and cooled our skin,
as we walked down the hill
through the meadow towards
the creek.
i said that i wished
it would rain
and everyone would
get drenched.
after five minutes a rainbow
spread down from the sky
and sat conspicuous and shy
on our creekside.
i shouted like a child,
"RAINBOW!"
i raced for the pot of gold.
giant drops came careening down,
then in a moment the sky opened.
i entered the forest where
the party was taking place.
people began crowding under a small tentspace.
i counted 22, huddled around, thinking dry thoughts
all in a mass.
one naked girlchild stumbled
into the downpour, unconcerned.
i abandoned the tent and half
stumbled dumbly, teetered my
head back to watch the leaves
battered and dancing under the
force of wetfall.
