The Day of Truth

Apr 13, 2005 22:16

So, I'm assuming everyone knows about the "Day of Silence?" I did it today, and only broke my silence once. It was ultimately a very bad protest for two reasons:
  1. You can't change something by doing nothing, and,
  2. It's hard to raise awareness when you can't speak.

All that aside, it brought some national media attention to the issue of gay rights, so it was worthwhile if just for that. But my favorite part is the aftereffect of the Day of Silence... most notable, the creation of the "Day of Truth," which will be tomorrow.

In case you got your hopes up, the Day of Truth won't involve President Bush explaining to us about how he's using mercenaries to kill poor Afghan farmers trying to grow opium, or Tom DeLay explaining to us how $500,000 of his political action fund wound up in the pockets of his wife and daughter, or my city explaining to me why they've asked me to BOIL MY WATER for the next few days, but rather, it will involve the Christian Alliance Defense Fund telling us the "truth" about homosexuality. Let's take a look. The Day of Truth was established to counter the promotion of the homosexual agenda and expresses an opposing viewpoint from a Christian perspective.

Participating students are encouraged to wear T-shirts and pass out cards (not during class time) with the following message:

I am speaking the Truth to break the silence. I believe in equal treatment for all, and not special rights for a few. I believe in loving my neighbor, but part of that love means not condoning detrimental personal and social behavior. I believe that by boldly proclaiming the Truth, hurts will be halted, hearts will be healed, and lives will be saved.
Now for the really disturbing part...

THESE LUNATICS ARE GOING TO BE PROTESTING AT DEERFIELD HIGH SCHOOL TOMORROW!

But all is not lost... my counter protest is already planned. Me and three other guys are going to dress up in robes and turbins and long black beards, and two girls are going to come with us dressed in burqas, and chained at the wrists. We're all going to stand right next to the protesters and hold up big signs that say,
  • "PRAISE BE TO ALLAH!"
    "DEATH TO THE UNITED STATES!"
  • -and-
  • "PURGE ALL HOMOSEXUALS!"
