chocolick << Previous Chapter Yunho was sixteen when he got his first girlfriend.
His girlfriend was a shy girl from his class; she resembled a porcelain doll with her milky white skin, red plush lips and a mysterious smile, like she was always hiding something. He took her out on a casual movie-dinner date, making small talk about school and future studies. She wanted to take up economics, study the economy and help in its booming. He admired her, she was substantial girl. Unlike other sixteen year olds, who cared about their hair and make up and dating boys, she cared about bigger things, about the greater good. She, also, told him that she liked reading people, studying their body language
“People can lie, Yunho-shi…” she said, leaning toward him and smiling. “Their bodies can’t. Now, look at that guy, for example…” she discretely pointed at a couple sitting a few tables away. “He’s clearly cheating on his girlfriend.”
“How…do you know?” Yunho asked, looking at her.
“He’s fidgeting too much, each time his girlfriend reaches out to hold his hand…he gets a bit jumpy and he’s checking his phone more than necessary. And if I didn’t know better, I’d say the other girl is around here somewhere.” She smiled, her eyes glinting.
Yunho watched her, half in admiration and half amusedly and continued eating his dinner. And when they were leaving the restaurant, Yunho spotted the guy in a dark corner, lips locked with the waitress that was serving his girlfriend and him for the night.
-
“Do you mind going out with me, again? This weekend…we could go to the new park.” He asked, leaning against the locker besides hers, when they met later at school.
“Of course, I would love to.” She smiled, a light blush rising to her cheeks.
“Great, I’ll pick you up then. Deal?”
“Deal.” She smiled.
He smiled and broke into a sprint to catch up with Yoochun and Changmin;
“So - are you serious with her?” Yoochun asked, jerking his head in her direction.
“She’s cool.” Yunho shrugged, fixing his hair before entering class.
“I have to class now, but if you fall in love with someone before I do, I am never ever talking to you, Hyung.” Changmin threatened and sprinted away to his class.
“That kid…” Yoochun chuckled, watching Changmin’s shrinking figure. “Do you know - Hey look! It’s that Kim- Kid, let’s go bug him.”
Yunho rolled his eyes; “C’mon Yoochun, we are too old for that and you know it too.”
“Yeah, I know.” Yoochun sighed, taking his seat. “He sings well.”
“How…do you know?”
“He’s in music class with me, you know where I play the piano yeah, he has a nice voice.”
“Hmm…”Yunho hummed, sitting down next to Yoochun. “So what, you stopped pulling pranks on him?”
“We’re not fifteen anymore, Yunho.”
Yunho laughed; “Finally, someone grows up.”
-
It was the weekend and Yunho was all dressed up to go pick her up; he had done his hair up nicely, taken a shower and wore decent clothes. Maybe he did like her more than he thought he had, since he had never actually dressed up for anyone.
His phone buzzed against the hard wood of his table announcing a message received. It read;
“Ah, Yunho-shi, I’m so sorry, but I am still stuck at the mall with my mother, so you don’t need to pick me up. I’ll meet you directly at the park. I hope that’s okay ^^”
He sighed and quickly typed out a “It’s fine, I’ll meet you at the park.” And giving his reflection a last once over, he walked out of his house. He felt like this was going to be a long night.
-
He trotted into the park, playfully kicking the leaves on his way. It was a pretty evening, there was a nice fragrance in the breeze, and the place wasn’t too crowded. Yunho stood on a bridge, watching his own reflection on the river that flowed below, when his gaze fell on…him.
He wasn’t sitting too far away, just by the bank. He sat by an empty canvas, a platelet of colors in one hand and a brush in the other. his eyes seemed like they were thinking and far off, the light that fell on him made him glow, he looked beautiful; Yunho slowly let go of the breathe he didn’t know he was holding. He was Kim Jaejoong.
“Hi…”Yunho approached the other boy carefully, afraid his voice alone would break the fragile being.
He turned, looking shocked at first and then relaxed when he saw Yunho’s face, putting the brush and platelet down, he smiled at Yunho.
“Oh, hi…”
“What are you doing here?” Yunho asked, sitting down but keeping a safe distance from Jaejoong.
“I - -uh, I needed inspiration. For my new art project.” Jaejoong gave out a defeated sigh; “But nothing seems to be working. What are you doing here?”
“I’m just waiting for someone.”
“Oh, your date?”
“How do - “
“Yoochun has a big mouth.”
“Oh he - Wait! You guys talk to each other now?!”
Jaejoong laughed and Yunho’s lips unconsciously twisted into a smile;
“Yeah…” Jaejoong said; “He did apologize for his behavior. He didn’t say anything about Changmin though, the other guy, that’s his name right? Changmin…”
Yunho nodded and Jaejoong continued;
“…he was very guilty about the pranks and everything. But, Yunho-sshi…could I ask you something?”
“It’s Yunho. Yeah, go ahead.”
“You never bullied me or tried to pull a prank on me or laughed at me, why so?”
Yunho grinned; “I didn’t find you important.”
“Yah!” Jaejoong slapped Yunho’s arm playfully. “And now, I am important enough that you’re talking to me?”
“I think you’re important.” Yunho said, his grin not faltering.
“What do you mean?”
“I don’t know…it’s like, you’re not like everyone else. There’s something different about you. Something else.”
Jaejoong froze, eyes widening and Yunho wanted to die.
“That’s - - what I. That’s what I thought about you.”
Yunho held his breathe back, Jaejoong thought about him. Why did that excite him? Why did that make his heart race? Why was it hard to breathe, all of a sudden?
Yunho caught Jaejoong’s gaze and held it. They stared at each other, not blinking, not breathing. Thoughts flickered through Yunho’s head, what was happening? What was he supposed to do? He wanted to look away, but there was something about the way Jaejoong was, he couldn’t just look away. The setting rays of the sun played on Jaejoong’s face and softened his features, his lips were plush and the pillow like and Yunho almost (almost) wanted to touch it.
“Yunho, I - “
“Oh Yunho-sshi, I was searching for you everywhere.”
Yunho and Jaejoong jerked up and saw Yunho’s date staring at them, smiling. “Hello Yunho-sshi…Jaejoong-sshi.”
Jaejoong bowed to her politely and Yunho got up; “Ok Jaejoong, I’ll see you tomorrow at school. Bye.”
And before Jaejoong could speak back, Yunho grasped the girl by her elbow and pulled her away, his heart racing at a speed very alien to him. Later that night, when he kissed his date goodbye in front of her house, he couldn’t help but wonder how it felt to kiss Jaejoong.
-
They broke up the next day.
Yunho and his girlfriend. (Was she ever, really?)
“It isn’t working out.” That’s what she had said, over the phone. “I am sorry, Yunho-sshi…but I feel like maybe we were supposed to be just friends.”
“Yeah, maybe.” Yunho had shrugged.
“I am glad you understand. Oh, and one more thing…”
“Yes?”
“Remember what I said about body language? The other night…”
“Yes…”
“Just remember Yunho-sshi, it’s the only language that has no lies. Body language never lies.”
Yunho kept down the phone confused and worried about what she meant.
Body language never lies.
-
“I left high school because of you.”
What did he mean by that? Why would he say something like that? How dare he say something like that? After everything that happened in high school, Yunho left because of Jaejoong, that wasn’t even right, it was all wrong. On so many grounds that was, just plain wrong. And mean.
Jung Yunho was a mean and wrong person. And Jaejoong was so close to coming clean to Taeyeon about this person, but he held himself back, when he saw how happy she was around him.
Okay, maybe he wasn’t all that mean.
“Yo, Jaejoong Hyung….” Junsu snapped Jaejoong out of his train of thoughts; “What’s up? You look so grumpy, is everything alright?”
“What? Yeah, yes. Everything’s fine.”
“It’d better be…I have no one else to give me company.” Junsu pouted, linking his arms with Jaejoong’s. They were out along with Taeyeon and Yunho, shopping. And Jaejoong wasn’t sure if he wanted to be around Yunho.
The previous night, when Jaejoong had asked Yunho what he meant, Yunho had just smiled and walked off, after thanking Jaejoong for the midnight meal and since then, Jaejoong could not get it off his mind.
“I left high school because of you.”
How annoying,
“I really think I have seen that Yunho guy somewhere…” Junsu said, carefully eyeing Taeyeon and Yunho who walked ahead of them. “I just can’t place him, but I know I have seen him.”
“Oh shut it, Junsu. He has a common face.” Jaejoong snapped, really not wanting to discuss Yunho or anything related to him.
“Fine, fine, geez someone has their panties in a bunch.” Junsu mumbled and Jaejoong shot him a death look; Junsu was not helping,
“I want an ice cream.” Taeyeon said, stopping abruptly and looking at the three men. “I really want an ice cream.”
“Okay…” Yunho nodded; “I’ll buy you one.”
“I want all of us to have ice cream.”
“…what’s that supposed to mean?”
“I mean, I don’t want to eat alone.”
“Why? Does it make you feel fat?” Junsu laughed and Taeyeon hit him.
“No…Let’s all have ice cream.”
“I don’t want ice cream.” Yunho and Jaejoong said in unison and looked at each other, slightly taken aback. Yunho smiled at Jaejoong and the latter pointedly looked away.
“I don’t actually mind some…” Junsu nodded; “Come on kid, I’ll buy you ice cream.” He said, waving to Taeyeon.
“I’m the same age as you are doofus.” She snorted; “Anyway, are you sure the both of you don’t want ice cream?” she asked, looking at Yunho and then, Jaejoong.
“Yeah, I am sure.” Jaejoong nodded;
“Yeah, me too.” Yunho agreed.
“Okay, so I’ll go get ice cream with the pig here and Yunho, you can talk to Jaejoong about - - you know that thing…” Taeyeon gave him a smile and walked off with Junsu
Yunho and Jaejoong watched them walk and Jaejoong was half ready to run after them when Yunho spoke; “She wants me to buy couple rings.”
“What?!”
“For. For the engagement.”
“Oh, but you haven’t spoken to our dad yet.”
“I plan on talking to him tonight.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, I thought if you could help out with the rings -“
“Why did you say that?”
“Huh? What?”
“Why did you say that last night? What did you mean? Why would you say that?”
“Jaejoong, I…”
“I was the one who put up with the silly tricks your friends pulled on me, I was the one who suffered being made fun of and you tell me you left high school because of me? That’s not fair, Yunho. And you were the one who - “
“Look, I didn’t mean to hurt you okay.”
“Well you did. Even though Yoochun and Changmin were the ones who pulled pranks on me, nobody hurt me like you did.”
“Jaejoong…”
“Just - go away.”
-
When Yunho was seventeen, he fell in love for the first time.
When Yunho was young, he knew he would spend the rest of his life with a person who would make finger licking good sandwiches (because Yunho loved sandwiches more then anything in the world) and that too, sandwiches without tomatoes. And, also, the person would ask, after offering the sandwiches; “Hey, do you want orange juice with that?”
Even when he grew older, he knew it was kind of lame and silly, but he was still a naïve boy on the inside and he still believe sandwiches were the best form of food there ever was.
-
“My parents are ditching me and going on a trip together, can I crash at your place for like a week?” Yoochun asked Yunho, sliding into the seat next to him.
“Sure, why not? We could watch “My Sassy Girl’ for the weekend.” Yunho smiled.
“On second thought, maybe I should ask Changmin - - or even Jaejoong.”
Yunho arched an eyebrow; “Jaejoong, really?”
“What? He’s pretty cool.”
“I am sorry, I wasn’t the one who pulled lame, mindless jokes on him.”
“Oh my, God, stop bringing that up over and over again, alright? We ever young and immature.”
“Guys, oh God, guuuuuuuuuuys.” Changmin came flying to where Yunho and Yoochun were seated and nearly cried out of happiness; “Guys, guuuu~uys, that new kid, Kyuhyun, he has the new version of ‘Star Craft.’ You know the one that’s not even out. OH. MY. GOD. I think I am going to cry.” And saying, Changmin flew out of view again.
“He is still young and immature.” Yunho tsk-ed, shaking his head.
“Can I live with you for the week?” Yoochun sighed and Yunho laughed;
“Sure. And we won’t watch ‘My Sassy Girl’ okay? Well, at least not more than once.”
“Deal.” Yoochun laughed.
-
“Dude, could you pick me up from my music class. Please?”
“What am I? Your father?”
“Pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaase Yunho. Pleaaaaaaaaaaase. It’s going to be dark and you know I am scared of the dark, pllllleeeeeeeeease.”
“Fine, fine. Stop whining.”
“I love you <33333”
“Whatever.”
Yunho stared at the white building, he was pretty sure this was where Yoochun’s music class was, or at least this was where he thought it was. He padded into a room labeled; ‘Music Room’
Yeah, this was definitely it.
“Excuse me…” Yunho peeked in. “Oh hi Jaejoong.”
Jaejoong swiveled around, music sheets in his hands. “Oh Yunho…hi. I thought you were Yoochun.” He said, placing the music sheets back on the piano.
“ I am here to pick Yoochun up, where is he?”
“In the washroom, he writes mind blowing music.” Jaejoong said, pointing to the music sheets.
“He’s a genius at all that.” Yunho nodded; “and he’s told me you sing well”
“I - -just, for a hobby.” Jaejoong shrugged, smiling shyly.
“Oh…”
“Oh hey Yunho~” Yoochun walked in; “I love you okay.”
“Yes, yes whatever. Now get your things let’s go.”
“Fine, don’t be a grumpy bear.”
Yunho rolled his eyes and Jaejoong giggled; “Okay, I better get going. It is pretty late.”
“We can walk you home if you like.” Yoochun shrugged.
“Ah, no thanks. I have my driver picking me up.”
“Oh right. Anyway, see you tomorrow, Joongie.”
“Later Chun.”
Yunho waited till Jaejoong walked out of the room and turned to Yoochun; “What? Are you guys like best friends now?”
“Why? Are you jealous?” Yoochun asked, wiggling his eyebrows and plastering a greasy smile.
“No, just kinda disgusted. Joongie? Chun? Really?”
“You are just jealous.”
“No. I am not.”
Yunho was liar. He was jealous because he could not call Jaejoong; “Joongie” It was mainly because of Yoochun that Jaejoong was somehow, now a part of the group and Yunho saw more of Jaejoong. So much more. He wasn’t sure if he liked all of it, but he wasn’t complaining either. Jaejoong was funny, caring and a little vulnerable. Even Changmin had taken a liking towards him after tasting his food. There was a feeling of familiarity around Jaejoong, like nothing around him could go wrong, he had motherly instincts towards Changmin and weird sense of sisterly bond with Yoochun; it was crazy. He was awkward around Yunho and Yunho around him. They never got past being formal and making small talk though Yunho yearned to talk to Jaejoong; but he just could not.
-
“I have a date tonight.”
Yoochun choked, Yunho sprayed his juice out, Jaejoong stared.
“WHAT?” Yoochun coughed; “Say that again, I think I have wax in my ears - “
“I have a date. What? Why is that so hard to believe?” Changmin sighed, putting his chopsticks down.
“Uh, because you are loser and you can only make love to your porn collection. If you are going to tell me that your porn collection is your date then - “
“It’s this girl from my class, she’s kinda cute and stuff.” Changmin huffed. “And I kinda like her.”
“When do you have to pick her up?” Jaejoong asked.
“At around six.”
“Fine, I’ll help you get ready.” Jaejoong smiled and Changmin beamed at him.
“Thanks Hyung~ you are so much better than these assholes who claim to be my best friends.”
Yunho snorted; “The only time you have spoken to a girl before was when you asked her for a pen.”
“Yeah…that’s the same girl I have a date with.”
Yoochun and Yunho roared with laughter.
-
“I am nervous.”
“Of course you are.” Jaejoong said, patting down Changmin’s hair and brushing his shirt. “This is your first date, you have to be nervous.”
“I don’t know…what if I bore her? or spill juice on her? or I don’t know…hate her?”
“Just walk away.”
“Isn’t that rude? I mean, I have to pay the bill and stuff - “
“Women are equal to men, so don’t worry about the crap.”
“Hey Changmin…” Yunho and Yoochun walked into Changmin’s room, beaming at him. “All set?”
“Absolutely.” Changmin nodded.
“You’ll do fine.” Yoochun said, patting his back. “Tell you what, I’ll give you a ride and let the master fill you up with tips on how to deal with the ladies.”
Changmin half scoffed, half laughed; “Right. The ladies
“What? I am not kidding…this is your first date and you need a tips. And a ride, but mostly the tips.”
“ Fine…” Changmin and allowed Yoochun to escort him out of the room.
“He’s so awkward with girls, it’s not funny.” Yunho laughed, settling down on Changmin’s bed.
“You guys are so mean to him.” Jaejoong frowned.
“Mean to him, us? Have you not seen the way he treats us? Why does he not treat you the same way.”
“I cook for him.”
“Right. But you know, I am happy for him.” Yunho shrugged. “Hey, is there something to eat…I am really hungry.”
“Yeah - “ Jaejoong’s phone rang in his pocket; “Oh excuse me…”
“Hello - yeah Junsu, with friends of mine. She’s what? Good God, the both of you are going to kill each other. Yes, I will come home soon - please ask Taeyeon to stop shouting. Yes, Junsu…yes okay. Bye.”
“Problems?” Yunho asked.
“Nah, just my best friend and sister trying to eat each other up…”
“Oh, they sound nice.”
Jaejoong laughed; “Yeah, they are kind of like that. You said you were hungry?”
“Oh yeah…I am starving.”
“Come on, I had made some sandwiches earlier for Changmin, he was so nervous. I have been meaning to ask, where are Changmin’s parents, anyway?” Jaejoong asked, walking out of the room and into the kitchen.
“They’re never home, really, always touring on business trips.” Yunho shrugged, following Jaejoong into the kitchen.
“Here you go…” Jaejoong put a plate of sandwiches on the counter top for Yunho; “I hope you like it, there are no tomatoes though.”
“Oh…” Yunho looked at the sandwiches, taking one into his hand. “I hate tomatoes in my sandwiches.” He said, taking a bite.
His heart froze.
“How is it?” Jaejoong asked, biting his lip nervously and balling his fists.
“Finger licking good.” Yunho smiled and stuffed his face, testing his capacity as he tried to fit another one in.
“I’m glad you liked it…” Jaejoong laughed, walking up to the refrigerator. “Hey, do you want some orange juice with that?”
