Yesterday Nick set up my new computer desk and I finally got to use my new computer (also put together by Nick). Oh. My. Freaking. God. It is sooooo fast. My old computer was insanely outdated - I'd gotten it in 2001 before I started college. The new one isn't top-top of the line, but it's damn close for the $500 it cost to get the component parts. It's got an AMD processor that's the equivalent of a 3.something GHz Intel one. It's got 1GB of memory and a 200GB hard drive. From pressing the power button to being able to open a browser window only takes about 20 seconds. But the thing that made me happiest (and the way you can tell my old computer was from the age of the dinosaurs) was finally being able to have USB 2.0. I used Nick's external hard drive to transfer all my music and pictures and such to the new computer. It took TWO HOURS to transfer onto the drive, but using the USB 2.0 on the new computer, it only took SIX MINUTES to transfer to the new computer. I could have wet myself.
So now my computer's all shiny and new (well, actually the keyboard, mouse, monitor, sound card, DVD burner, printer, and scanner are the same, but all the other stuff is new). And it's going to be a long, long time before I run out of space (I partitioned my drive so that 140 of the 200GB is a storage area that won't get overwritten if I have to reinstall Windows). My next task is to finish changing the ID3 tags on all my songs so that the artist, title, and genre info comes up correctly, especially when I transfer them to my mp3 player. This has turned into a major and painful undertaking, but it's going to be nice when I'm all done and I can actually sort songs by artist and genre and stuff won't come up as "Unknown artist, Unknown title."
