What am I THINKING?

I'm in the planning stages of a Moulin Rouge(!) can-can costume I'm hoping to have done by Katsucon so I'll have something to wear, appropriate or not. (I'm gonna need to get a new dress form in order to make Charlotte's gown and I'm not sure that's going to happen between now and then.)

Here's the description of the outfit I'm making, from the catalog of the museum that currently holds it, so you can see what I'm REALLY up against.

Description
Film costume, Mome Fromage, from the movie, 'Moulin Rouge', various materials, designed by Baz Luhrmann / Catherine Martin / Angus Strathie, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 2000

Mome Fromage (Mother Cheese) [Maura: Actually "Kid Cheese" I think. Nobody seems to have any idea why she was called that.] worn by Lara Mulcahy, consisting of bodice, skirt, bra, corset, knickers, garters, stockings, headpiece, earrings, gloves and boots.

Bodice of black velvet and pink net. Broad shoulder straps of black velvet cut in one piece with the front panel of the bodice. The sleeve puffs are only joined under the arms and sit mid-way between the shoulder and elbow, so the shoulder is visible between the strap and sleeve. The sleeve is a very exaggerated puff of yellow taffeta covered with hot pink net dotted with embroidered black polka dots and clusters of the black sequins. At the base of the sleeve black braid runs around the arm, under which there is a wide frill of the gathered pink and yellow fabric. The neckline of the black velvet bodice is square cut under the bust, over the breasts there is a gathered piece of the same hot pink net, dotted with black over yellow net. These are gathered in to form a 'V' at centre front, the back neckline is 'V' cut.

The black velvet of the bodice reaches a point at the base of centre front and centre back and each of the seams of the bodice panel are piped with yellow and pink brocade. Down the centre panel of the velvet are 3 large pom poms, which decrease in size down the front, of pink and yellow net.

The bodice laces down centre back with 11 black metal eyelets down each side and black cotton laces. The bodice is lined with flesh coloured cotton with the pink and black dotted net around the inside base hem. There are 15 bones and 3 tabs that fasten with press studs inside each shoulder strap to fasten to a bra strap.

A full can can skirt of hot pink and yellow damask which is dotted with large pom poms of black net sprinkled with black sequins and beads. Just below the knee the damask is trimmed with a gathered black velvet ribbon in large scallops. Below this is a deep frill of tightly the gathered pink net over the yellow taffeta. The skirt is lined with a very heavily flounced petticoat, made up of 14 flounces in turquoise and blue net and taffeta all embroidered with black and pink polka dots and edged with pink ribbon and black and pink scalloped edging braid. The skirt fastens with 5 press studs, a hook and eye on the waistband and a tape tie.

A bra by Triumph International, Size 22DD. The bra is pale pink, but edged with black under the arms and there are broad black straps. The bra does not finish directly below the bust, it continues down the body for a few inches. It is decorated with small embroidered roses. There is one bone up each side.

A corset of peach and cream floral brocade. It is trimmed along the top with a pink and green fly fringe and along the right top there is cream lace. The corset has a busk fastening up the centre front, with 5 hooks and laces up the centre back with 11 metal eyelets and cream cotton lacing. The corset is lined with flesh coloured cotton twill and there are 38 bones, either set within the lining, or in white satin casings. There are 4 suspender clips suspended from the bottom edge - these are on elastic covered in the same floral brocade. The straps are decorated with moulded silver metal buckles. There are 2 peach cotton laces stitched on the back at the waist.

Hot pink satin French knickers edged with a frill of purple and pink shot mesh. There are large sequins dotted around the crotch and along the legs.

Two matching garters of black elastic decorated with pink and cream net, black piping and a bow of black net.

Peach shaped fishnet stockings with an elasticated cream and peach lace border at the top.

Headpiece of black net with stripes of black velvet ribbon in a bow shape. In the centre of the bow, there is a ball of red sequins with 2 black beads and a black beak, which resembles a bird's face. There are 2 other sequin and horsehair tassels in black, red and pink mounted on thin black feathers.

A pair of pierced earrings of green diamante encircling a pearl mounted in brass, supplied by Peter Lang Pty Ltd.

A pair of lime green wrist length cotton gloves.

A pair of pink suede and black leather heeled ankle boots in an Edwardian style. The piece covering the foot and at the back of the heel is leather, with a border of cut-out circles. The section rising up around the ankle and leg is pink suede, piped with black and with a border of black hearts around the top. The boots button down the front outside side with small black plastic and metal buttons. There is a 3"/7.5cm Louis heel.

Truly Victorian actually has a can-can skirt pattern and a bodice pattern I can modify without a ton of trouble. (Yes, I could draft some, but that's my least favorite part of any costume and I'd rather not if I don't have to.) Man, I hope my ruffler attachment is up to some hard work and that I can find a whole lot of taffeta crazy cheap, cause I'm thinking 10 yards of fabric for petticoat ruffles alone.

Yay! Another updo wig! And so's Charlotte! My next costume after those is going to have LONG FLOWING TRESSES, I tell you what.
