This is a semi-personal project I did in Illustrator during my summer session in Book Arts. The project deals with idiosyncratic notions of childhood, where fueled by imagination, a simple object becomes a character, a personification of something greater. I personally tended to play with pieces of paper, sticks and bottle caps when I was little, although I had an abundance of actual toys. It is the foundational concept of The Royal Paperclips -- taking an ordinary object, seemingly unimportant, and glorifying it.
The featured paperclips are actual designs patented throughout the years, with actual names, including the commonly used "Gem" paperclip. In the final piece, these cards were stained to achieve antiqueness, and placed in a small tin box with a hand-made clay cameo of a crowned paperclip.
The final is or will be on display at my uni, so unfortunately I do not have it to take a picture.
Now I'm going to take a nap. Ta-ta.
