An almost 4,000 word article with the title "Sacking Berlin" and NOT A SINGLE MENTION OF THE BERLIN BANKING SCANDAL OF 2001! EPIC FAIL!
Authors briefly cite a Spiegel article mentioning the sell-off of public housing, but conveniently neglect the entire social context in which it occured, instead preferring some nebulous, culturalist narrative about tourism and hipsters.
This is the problem with the sort of "culturalist" intepretative matrix of a journal like the Baffler; absolutely no sense of analyzing things in terms of political economy. Instead, the authors, like awe-struck American exchange students doing a semester abroad, just reel out the standard cliches: Iggy and Bowie! Weimar decadence! Squatters!
Anybody looking for a more grounded, serious radical analysis of Berlin's problems should consult the recently published _Berlin Reader_ edited by Bernt, Grell, and Holm, published by transcript verlag and distributed by Columbia University Press
