Jewish Film Festival in Vienna
(Official programme, venues and dates).

I´m thankful for any recommendations, since I´m not into mainstream movies and this is a rare chance to fill some of my absolute ignorance in this field!

If "Mutter Courage" is the one written by Max Tabori, then it should be very good
Otherwise - Izzie's favorite Jewish or Jewish themed films -none of which seem to be on the list are
"Abraham's Gold" (seriously creepy - this one) and "A Wedding in Galilee"
In this one - is set somewhere on the West Bank and the local Palestinian bigwig is organizing a big wedding for his son. Problem is - the Israeli army has imposed an after dark curfew so he has to get an exemption in order to have the wedding. The local army chief wickedly suggests that the wedding will be allowed but only on condition that he and bunch of soldiers are allowed to attend

The Front - if that's the one about the Blacklist during the McCarthy witch hunts - that was very good

Oh - silly Izzie. Georg not Max Tabori!
Seen his play "Mein Kampf" while living in Hamburg. Izzie just loved his wicked twisted sense of humour. Noticed in the movie notes that he died this year.

And in spite of Woody Allen being such a whining sad pathetic little git, he was very good in The Front which turns out to be just the one we thought it was
Seen it back in the bogs of Ireland on TV with the Izzie's sister. She thought the whole thing with the credits where most of the names had 'blacklisted' next to them - she thought it was all part of the joke and was shocked and astonished to hear that such things really happened.

LOL, no wonder I googled Max and came up with nothing :p Is The Front a war movie? Then I´d very much like to catch it (the "blacklisted" bit is hair-raising... a wonder the movie got released at all!)

I am bad... I haven't heard of any of these so I can't make a recommendation. I do hope you'll have a good time watching one or more of these :)

Thank you, there´s such a vast choice there, it´s just difficult to pick just one or two, maximum :D

I know bits of The Golem, but am thinking of the 1915 silent movie version. So which Golem will you be seeing?

The same holds true for The Jazz Singer. Which one? The movie ties in with The Jolson story, because that movie is about the singer Al Jolson, who played the title role in the 1927 version of the Jazz Singer.

I found that version interesting because it is the first feature-length motion picture with synchronized dialogue sequences, thus heralding the decline of the silent movie.

I saw The Jazz Singer (the ´27 one) a very long time ago, but I don´t remember much about it, maybe because I´m a bit tone-deaf to jazz :p I think it´s the Murnau Golem version?

The 1915 only survived with a few fragments. The movie had been directed by Paul Wegener and Hendrik Galeen. I don't think Murnau ever did a Golem version but I'm not sure.

*tilts head* *tilts some more* *still doesn't recognize any of these movies*
If this is mainstream, then I don't want to know what the movies I'm usually watching are called. Sorry, I'm of no help here. But I hope you'll have a good time!

LOL, thank you! "ell, they´re mainstream here as in, half of Vienna cinemas play non-blockbusters since about the only audience those have are young teenagers :p The current hit is "Odette Toulemonde", for instance...

And we mustn't ever forget the utterly evil "Thank you for smoking" which probably lasted no longer than two weeks in dreary old Dursleyville where 95% of the movies showing are boring Hollywood blockbusters
