2014 continues.

Hey all.

So per the last post, I am on Tumblr now and it's been a pretty good means of keeping up with people since so many seem to have abandoned LJ here in the last couple years. I'm still not thrilled with how different the UI and other features are, but I have to shrug my shoulders and admit that it is in fact a pretty reliable font of fun and nifty things. Please do recommend any good blogs in the comments section if you can be arsed.

It's been quiet on my little front here for rather a while (most of 2013 it looks like), largely for two reasons. Firstly, I keep an offline text journal for my own enjoyment (and to help my crusty old brain remember what the hell I did two days ago) which I keep on a fairly daily basis, and it seems unlikely that the things that occupy ~my~ mind every waking moment are all that applicable or even palatable to wider tastes. Secondly, well, there're two people I know who still read here from time to time, which is totally fine - I'm glad you're still about. But that's just not the kind of readership that's going to encourage a regular sharing of views on sociopolitics or regular discussions of exactly what was The Who's best album. So basically, I foresee this journal here becoming a little like my presentmas tree. Only occasionally used but always kept and sometimes referenced.

Zooming out to the world outside my screen, the weather's been all over the shop this winter so far. Things kicked off around Turkeygiving with good deals of snow and some nights with properly chilling temperatures, but I can think of at least 4-5 times since then that the sky has cleared up and things have been beautiful (one Sunday during the holiday break from work saw sunshine and 60F outside, no joke). It really seems to be getting into the real deal now, though - today is supposed to get as high as the freezing point and maybe bring some spotty rain, but starting tonight we're supposed to get some ~almighty~ cold air coming down from the North bringing highs of ~zero~ and something like a foot-plus of snow (depending on what source you trust for a weather forecast). I sure don't relish the thought of driving through THAT to get to work and back (I have done it before, but I've had a kidney stone before too). There's a ~chance~ that much cold and snow might shutter the workplace - it's happened before - but as my public schools (and to a lesser extent college) always seemed to be, usually it's "if you can see the treetops above the snow, we expect you to be here". We'll see how that pans out.

On the topic of tech, things at the ol' Roost have been back-sliding for a while, mostly for the same reasons as many other things in life - lack of time and energy as a result of work being busy. Let me display the same employment-specific Tourette's tic as the last 7-odd years and say that I don't actually dislike my job on the whole - I just wish it bit slightly less time out of my life, is all. But things picked slightly back up in the last two weeks with the restoration of the presently-used machine, Gamma Neo, which had a partial HDD crash last July during that ~delightful~ period where a car breakdown on a road trip directly preceded a case of food poisoning which ~directly preceded~ a week and a half of respiratory illness in an episode that I'm pretty sure will stand in memory for years and eventually acquire a nickname like "2013 Summer Meltdown" or something. But the system lives again, and so all three of Skynet's portable machines are operational again and fit for duty. Further progress is ~slated~ to happen today (though again time will tell if it does) with the resurrection of Skynet Alpha_3, the new primary machine for the network that by all rights should have been online and running things a solid year ago. But life did what life does, and obstacles have stood in the way until this point - and of course even now time still remains a factor. But oh well, it'll happen. And when it does, the new thing will be glorious indeed.

I think that'll do - better get on my way if I want to get fuel and food supplies before midday.

Catch you on the download.
