Goodbye Mr. President, Welcome Mr. President

Jan 20, 2009 11:02

I really feel sorry for all y'all crowing about 'thkgod bush is gone!' His time was up and he left with dignity. There have been many many worse presidents *coughClintoncough* and many better ones. I truly hope Mr. Obama is a better one. And I'm grateful and heartened by the fact that this country has done this 44 times over 233 years without a ( Read more... )

It's not just Bush they're happy to see go, it's his whole damn staff. While I cringe at the though of Clinton as Secretary of State, we can always hope Barack's plan is to dismiss her so she has to GO AWAY. I lead a rich fantasy life.

No Child Left Behind. You have that, and your state's crappy-ass education board, to thank for the fact that your daughter thinks a C on a reading test is a good grade.

Hurricane Katrina. Many levels of government were a part of this clusterfuck, up to and including the Feds. It was Bush's appointed FEMA director who sat there with his thumb up his ass while people died from heat stroke and dehydration. Ever seen a little baby with trench rot in her neck folds? I have. It's not pretty.

Bailout. Again, not Bush's fault alone, but some blame lies with him and Paulson, whom he nominated.

Delisting wolves from Idaho and Montana. President Bush signed this off personally. He and Cheney have made NUMEROUS other bad decisions when it comes to the Endangered Species Protection Act, basically attempting to strip it of all it's efficacy, with limited success.

Iraq. If he had flat out said, "Look, the world would be a better place is Saddam Hussein didn't run a very oil-rich country because he's a horrible dictator, so we're gonna go take ass and take names. Oh, and he might have some really nasty weapons because he's used them in the past," it would NOT have been hard to drum up support. Find a Hollywood producer to make a movie about what he did to the Kurds, his rape rooms and his diabolical sons, and people would have been SCREAMING for it. The reason the war was so unpopular is that the people feel lied to about WMDs. Not a lot of people were in favor of leaving Saddam alone, and I can't think of any who were sad he was captured, tried, and executed (except hard-core anti-death penalty people, and they just wished he'd been thrown into a jail to rot) and it COULD have been done so that everyone went home happy. Instead he acted on half-ass intelligence and then, by about 2005, proceeded to let things go to hell because, Oh, well we took out Saddam, our work here is done!

I could go on, but you get the idea. It's not just Iraq I'M pissed about.

ETA: AND THAT DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE AMENDMENT BULLSHIT. DOES NOBODY REMEMBER THE LAST TIME WE TRIED TO AMEND THE CONSTITUTION OVER A SOCIAL/MORAL ISSUE?!

I didn't say he was awesome, or even particularly good. Hell, Patriot Act and Homeland Security are both terrible idea. Well, HLS like it is now anyway.

I'm just saying, kinda tired of the whole, Bush is the worstest president ever eleventy1!

Taft, LBJ, Hoover, yea we've had much worse. Global media just makes it much easier to opinion poll someone to death these days. And if we didn't have a generally corrupt government these days we likely wouldn't have had nearly the fiasco's with Bush as we did. But at least he wasn't ruled by the opinion polls like his predecessor was.

Of course, I'm of the opinion we haven't had a good president since Reagan and haven't had good congressional governance since, oh, the 40's.

Anyway, Bush is gone so it's over and done.
