one of my students was having some difficulty with algebra. he'd go very fast and then forget to subtract or whatever. so i recommended gently that he write down all of the steps, rather than racing through, but he protested stubbornly. so i figured perhaps he had a point. i said, "alright, go ahead and try the next problem. just relax, it's no problem...and if i see any mistakes at all, i will scream at the top of my lungs. ready??"

he got the solution perfect.
