This post is for Tim Scannell only. If your not tim this doesn't concern you. If you really want to read it you can but it's pretty dry

Tim below is our paper. I also need you to do the bibliography and get the pix for various products. The sources we used were www.nyse.com, www.gillette.com and Evolution of gillette Cincinnati enquirerer January 29th 2005 Associated Press.

In 1985 King C. Gillette had a revelation while shaving. He realized that if he could affix a sharp edge onto a piece of sheet metal he could develop a razor that could be thrown away and easily replaced. He consulted metallurgists from MIT about the making of such an innovation, but they told him it was impossible. After six years Gillette found an engineer, named William Henry Eckerson, who could create the blade that Gillette was searching for.
In 1901 Gillette and Eckerson formed a partnership, which created the American Safety Razor Company. The company was soon renamed the Gillette company their founder King C. Gillette. The initially small and trifle Gillette Corporation faced an amazing level of competition in its beginning years. The product was very popular for companies, since almost half the world's population was potential consumers. These vicious competitors saw the potential in the shaver, and tried to develop similar razors to what the Gillette Company produced. The result was a plethora of patent wars that normally ended in a Gillette victory followed by buying the company.
Gillette lost a great deal of his fortune in the stock market crash of 1929, and because of the ferocious battles and fights within the razor industry. Sadly he would never see his company re-attain its former power and wealth, and would die in 1932.
Never the less, the company lived without its creator and expanded its products from safety razors to incorporate shaving cream, and anti-perspirant. The Gillete Company bought the personal care businesses Oral-B and Braun. The company would make a very bold move in the future and buy Duracell for 8 billion dollars in 1996. The result was very bad for Gillete. The intense competition within the battery industry from Energizer and Rayovac caused huge problems and Gillette started to go into a downward spiral. They were losing millions of dollars because of ill attention to this new branch in their ever-growing company.
The Gillete Company would hire James M. Kilts in 2001, the former president of Nabisco is known for his strict and disciplined style of management. Gillette made a one hundred eighty degree turn at that point for the better, and would never look back. In an attempt to gain some capital for future acquisitions they sold Paper Mate, Eraser Mate, and Liquid Paper. Stock figures began to turn around and the company once again became strong economically.
Kilts currently serves as the companies president and CEO of Gillette which has it’s corporate headquarters in the Prudential Tower Building in Boston Massachusetts.
Unfortunately the future of Gillette as an independent company is gone. In 2005 Gillette agreed to be acquired by product giant, Procter and Gamble. In the long term, however, this move is certain to help the company. For a long time, Gillete had been forced to rely upon the on dimensional success of its razor division. With Procter and Gamble the success of the corporation will not solely rely upon the strength of the safety razor, but on products in every part of the consumer field. Another benefit that is contained within the deal, is that James M. Kilts will stay onboard as Vice-chairman-Gillette where he will be able to contribute his experience to future operations of both companies and continue the legacy that he was started.
Gillette produces a wide variety of products one of which is the Gillette Mach 3 razor, which is the most popular razor in the world. When it was developed it was innovative as the result of incorporating three razors for a very close shave. This captured the support of male shavers for decades and creating product loyal consumers.
This razor incorporates Gillette's current slogan with its own image. Gillette's slogan of "Gillette the best a man can get" shows Gillette's position of the number one producer of men's hygiene products in the world.
Also produced by Gillette is the Venus razor. This razor is used today by 71% of all the women in America who shave. The razor also has three blades, similar to the successful Mach 3, and features a innovative disposable razor cartridge that locks into place on the handle.
Gillette is the world's number one producer of alkaline batteries as a result of its possession of Duracell batteries. Since the acquisition of James M Kits in 2001, this branch of the Gillette Company has gone from the weak link in a strong chain, to a solid producer today. It also holds a large stake in a Chinese battery company making it the world's largest producer of batteries. It's recent advertising campaign which features the slogan "Trusted everywhere" has been much more successful than any other previous campaign.
The Oral-B division of Gillette specializes in toothbrushes and toothpastes.
The Right guard division of Gillette produces men's anti-perspirant. The newest line of this product offers a "power strip" designed to cut down odors and wetness. The division also released an aerosol deodorant that features a can that has the release trigger on the side allowing for more comfortable application.
Braun the final division of Gillette produces electric shaving systems and appliances. The newest Braun product the Braun Cru3er is a men’s electric shaver that features shaving, trimming, and styling all in one.
Gillette was a company that was known in the nineties as a stock market favorite. Gillette at that time recorded record sales growth and stock in the company soared. However, the figures were bolstered by practices in the sales division of the company that put the company in debt as a result of salesmen doing only anything in order to meet their sales figures.
These days ended with the installation of Kilts. Almost immediately upon taking control of the company he announced to shareholders that the days of record sales were over. He told shareholders that they could expect moderate sales growth but not the gigantic leaps that were made in the nineties.
In the past year Gillette stock value has soared. In August the stock was valued at $37.77 today one share of stock is valued at $54.18. The stock has showed almost constant growth since August with a great spark coming upon the release of merger with Procter & Gamble in February which resulted in an eight dollar increase in one day.
Last year Gillette recorded over 10 billion dollars in sales with profits of over 2 billion which was a 23% increase from lat year. Sales have gone very well despite the Gillette reliance upon one key product.
The reason for such strong sales despite this reliance is the lack of much competition in the blades and razors industry. The closest competitor for this would be Schick. Schick, however, has just lost an appellate court decision over whether or not Schick has infringed upon the Gillette patent for the Mach 3 razor with its Quatro razor. There has yet to be a ruling on what actions Schick will have to take but the court decision can only help Gillette. Razors and Blades is the consumer category where Gillette is the undeniable world leader.
Oral-B is not a world leader in toothbrushes as Crest defeats it in that category. Braun is the number one U.S. maker of electric shaving systems and it faces very little competition. Duracell and the rest of the Gillette battery division is the number one producer of batteries in the world, yet it faces stiff competition from Energizer and Rayovac as well as foreign battery companies that produce less expensive non-alkaline batteries.
Gillette plays a pivotal role in the community of Boston and contributes to worthy causes worldwide. In Boston Gillette has set up a series of shelters for women and children who are the victims of domestic abuse. They donate many of their personal care products to the victims of natural disasters. They have a program dedicated to helping the families of cancer patients.
Gillette is known for having very safe and comfortable working conditions. They have multiple factories that have gone for extended periods of time without a workplace injury. Not only that but Gillette offers great benefits for its employees which includes health insurance, dental insurance, a 401k plan, life insurance, pension plan, back-up babysitting services for employees, free consultation on legal, medical, childcare, and other matters. Gillette also offers to pay the cost to attend college for approved courses and majors. Last but not least Gillette offers to match any and all contributions made to employees to any non-profit organizations.
The Gillette company is a Boston Icon and a leader in it’s field. It has a product that is marketable to the majority of the population of the world and it’s success is built upon the principals of a cheap quality product that can be thrown away and easily replaced. The company that King C. Gillette started in the late 1800’s has evolved into a worldwide conglomerate that shows strong financial growth
