^quote from tonight episode of Dollhouse.
I read an entry from Jewel's blog tonight. She was talking about fame and I found her description pretty interesting. (to read the whole thing, here's the url:

She also discusses longevity, authenticity, how everyone is connected, and songwriting.
"Being famous does not mean you are talented. It doesn't mean you are a good person, it doesn't mean anything except a lot of people know your face. At the end of the day
your artistic growth has to be guarded privately by the artist, and the moral integrity of the person must be shepherded by that person alone."
She says that there are two groups of famous people: the ones who strived to be the best at their craft and their fame was a side effect of that journey and dedication, and the other group are the people who used music, sports, acting, etc. as their ticket to fame. For the latter, they really just want to be famous and are using whatever they can to get there. For the first, they just want to do what they love and do it the best they can.
I feel like alot of people today are in the 2nd category. Everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame. I hope I never fall into that group and I hope people never think I'm just using music as a vehicle to becoming a celebrity. I know that really in order to make a living at doing stuff like music you need to be at least a little well known, but for me, fame hasn't really ever been the destination. It would be nice, sure. But I just love singing, writing, and performing so much, and I know that it's something I can have for the rest of my life even if I never really become "famous" or whatever.
One thing I kind of disagree with Jewel about in her blog is that she kind of insults (subtly, and respectfully though) people who spend alot of time networking. I don't spend tons of time networking, but I think it's a very good way to find opporunities for yourself that you wouldn't find by just sitting inside your room practicing 24/7. But you still should spend alot of your time practicing, of course. But she kind of portrays people who network as the superficial kinds of people who run along with category 2. But, seriously, networking is about meeting people and connecting and finding ways to help each other. who doesn't love that? lol.
I just hope I never come across as an attention-whore. :P
I love people. But, I am alot more introverted than most people think.
My favorite line from her blog is "Arrogance is the death of art," because when you're arrogant you think you know it all and are the best, but alot of art is about learning and recreating and stuff. Passion seems to die along with those things too.
"So, what is fame? It's lightening that strikes some people. It's
lightening that some people seek. It's luck and timing and hard work.
It's a tawdry flashlight that shines on your soul and reveals to you
your truest character and puts gasoline on your greatest flaws.
It delivers treasures that can add beauty or corrupt you with that same
beauty. But I can promise you a person who is famous is no different
than anyone who reads this. In the end there is only a great life lived,
or a life squandered, whether it was a public life or not. That is
something each of us share."
