Writer's Block: Comped

Mar 07, 2009 15:57

In high school, there was this girl that was part of my group of friends, but wasn't my friend, per se. She was highly intelligent but a bit of a social outcast, with a short temper and some strange behaviours. When we were younger we didn't really get along, but we didn't actively provoke each other, either. We had healthy respect for each other but the friendship thing would just never happen; and yet she was the one who paid me the best compliment ever.

When asked how she would describe me in a "people you know" poll, she described me as "brilliant". Coming from a non-friend who had a mild dislike of me, this was quite the compliment indeed. It gave me a confidence boost, that compliment, because I knew it was honest and unadulterated. She had no reason to sugar-coat anything, or even choose me as one of the people to pay a compliment to. And yet she called me brilliant.

It still makes me feel warm to this day. If you read this Kate, thank you.

writer's block, compliments
