I vote in my local elections. Having school age kids, it's important to me to have a voice in who is on the school board. In that case I ask some teachers what they think- they usually have way more insight into those kinds of things.
I live in a city broken into districts, and I always make sure to vote for my district supervisor. It's been easy so far, since I tend to get involved in my community and if I've seen a candidate out and about, helping get parks and libraries renovated and funded, then they have my vote.
In most instances I need to go off the information in the ballot measure handbook, and I vote for people that I really don't know- it's like, do I want to give this position to the woman who's been a housewife for 20 years? Or to the recent Berkeley grad with her eye on a life in politics? Sometimes it's just a toss up.
Our sales tax rate is 8.5 percent. That helps pay for public transportation, earthquake retrofitting and other expenses. I like to have my say on what things, if any, are going to increase an already high sales tax. Voting locally matters! :)
