Plz to be shitting on me some more. No, really. I haven't had quite enough dumped in a paper bag and left burning on my front porch, waiting for me to step on it, unbeknownst that it's poo.
Jinx and Porter were due for shots, so Jim, having the day off today, had made an appointment for them. We've noticed lately that Jinx has been hobbling a bit. Usually only when she's been lying for a while, she has some trouble standing up and then when she jumps in bed at night, sometimes it seems difficult for her. So Jim shared this with the vet, of course. He was feeling her legs and she yelped in pain when he was tugging gently on her left leg. So, they kept her for the afternoon to do an x-ray and see what is going on.
We went in at 2:45pm so he could go over the x-ray with us. She already has signs of hip displacia. This is something that is rather common in certain breeds of dogs (labs being one). She's awfully young though to have this already. It's present in both of her hips, though her left is a bit worse than the right and there is more arthritis in that one as well. She's fine, if not a little uncomfortable.
She has to take an anti-inflammatory for about ten days and then she needs to be on glucosamine permanently. The anti-inflammatory can be something she can be put on periodically if she's having an especially hobbley time. He said we don't have to start her on the glucosamine right now if we don't want to, as it's something that takes about a month to build up and then you have to stick with it. (If you stop taking it, you just have to start all over again) But we figure we may as well start it now if it will help her even a little bit.
At least he said she doesn't need surgery, nor is she a good candidate for surgery (since she's still youngish, she's way too active to have a hip replacement - best left for more sedentary dogs).
She's a rescue dog, so we have no idea what kind of stock she comes from, but obviously probably a mother or father with a history of it in their bloodline. She's fine for right now, but she'll likely have a hard time when she gets older.
My poor Jinxy. :(
