I started this year with a spectacularly good deed, if I say so myself: on January 1st I came to
ikel89 and finally made her watch A Study in Pink. Which she naturally loved. Now that she has caught up on the rest of it, she is all SHERLOCK: DO WANT, and I'm all WELCOME TO MY WORLD, so it's really all for the best, except I get to brag, and dragging my friends into my fangirling is seriously one of my most favourite things ever.
So, along with my cupcake, you all get my Sherlock fic reclist, that is not strictly all gen, but I've left out all the hardcore shipping stuff (though not the violence), so I could label it mildly safe, but some of the ideas explored are nowhere in the vicinity of safe, and anyway, I suck at rating stuff. There are clear warnings and ratings and stuff in the headers of all fics once you follow the links, okay? I'm just in it for the awesome.
BEST OF GEN (with occasionally sexual themes and bromance/squinty shipping but the writing is worth it)
Breakfast at 221 | AJ Hall
That's one of those with sexual themes, but it's so well-written and funny and just precious.
Traffic Lights for the Colour Blind |
lavvyan With tiny bit of kissing/pg-13 and asexual!Sherlock and John with a deathwish, this fic is perfection.
It's Not the Violin | sam_storyteller
Where Sherlock plays Lady Gaga. Also, one of the best authors ever, a must read.
Drowning Lessons |
solsticezero Where Sherlock is a thirteen year old girl and John is sweet about it, bromance reigns infinite. One of the recent pieces, but worth browsing for the rest, too. For instance,
Structural Colour, where Sherlock communicates with a five year old kid. Priceless. ETA: And because I'm deeply unmethodical even in my fangirling, but thankfully have a great f-list,
The Dealt Hand, the long, plotty, captivating perfection that must not be missed.
Precipitation |
orange_crushed Where snow isn't the only thing falling, and there is nail-filing and conversations about food. I cannot get over
orange_crushed's writing, it's so animate and beautiful.
The Reason of His Hatred | Undel
This is, apparently, a translation from Russian, but the original didn't work for me, somehow, while the English version flows perfectly well. An exploration of what lies at the root of Mycroft and Sherlock's feud and a fantastic idea, can't spoil. Read it.
How Mycroft Stopped Worrying About Sherlock |
jupiter_ash Where Mycroft has lists and is awesome.
Objects (Or Why Mycroft Needs His Umbrella) |
ryanbrendonlove Everybody has a mild fetish.
AU
Lucifer's Effect |
solsticezero An absolutely thrilling, gorgeous premise: med student John Watson has a peculiar assignment from his psycology professor and Mycroft Holmes is very probably psychopathic, and very locked up.
It Feels Like Home When I'm With You |
etothepii Where John is a ghost. A+++.
Elementary |
wafflestoriesWhere Sherlock deletes things, and John just forgets, not a genius supercomputer that he is. Preteen!John and kid!Sherlock have a chance encounter in a park.
Ain't Seen the Sunshine |
emungere Kid!fic with John Waston as the nanny/guardian everybody wants to have. John/Lestrade tendencies, but can be easily ignored. Spot-on John-Sherlock interaction. Retelling of The Hound of the Baskervilles. All-around enjoyable.
Playing Human |
snake_easing Ah, this should have probably come first and with big friendly letters: His Dark Materials Fusion. Utterly right, absolutely my favourite AU. Where Sherlock is not human, Mycroft is devastatingly so, Moriarty is incredibly well-constructed, and John is the best. Continuation:
Being Human;
Only Human;
Human Nature.
BAMF!JOHN (yes it is a category shut up)
Semper Fidelis | anon
Where John is the bamfest bamf ever and is still upset about the shopping.
Cadence to Arms |
mad_maudlin Where John has fusion hallucinations and it's seriously, honest-to-goodness blood-curling. Very clever writing. By the same author,
Apotheosis, where John hopps off the map for three years with a single-minded purpose of killing Moriarty and almost loses himself in the process.
MISC (HUMOUR & MULTIMEDIA & CROSSOVER)
He Chatters With His Fingertips &
Of Thyself From Myself |
woe_in_a_hoodie I adore
woe_in_a_hoodie's stuff, but the rest of it is very well Not Safe for the themes, not explicitness; this, however, is a fascinating project fusing Sherlock with
PostSecret fandom (is it a fandom?). Either way, I find the whole Secrets stuff properly chilling and the overall effect is stunning.
Bagattelle in Beige |
melaszka A very clever parody. 'nuff said.
My True Love Sent to Me |
wafflestories My personal favourite. Sherlock is being creatively romantic, there's texting and it's HILARIOUS.
Friends |
horcrionebayFanvid set to Flight of the Concords, and there are Special Guests whose presence even I approve of. Achingly funny.
Okay, and because it is pure torture not to include:
Getting Away With Murder |
irisbleuficGood Omens crossover. Do you think Sherlock can fool an angel? Exactly. And, frankly,
The Nice Young Man Upstairs, where Crowley shows up to complete the awesome, is fabulous (but there's some kissing).
Uninvited |
irisbleufic It's a poem. Inspired by artwork. All the aesthetically interested deities are commanding you to read this. (There's a kiss. You've been warned.)
