How it goes, Holiday editiion

The holidays. Here they are. Thanksgiving went over well enough. The second trip to Indy was less cold and just as homey. With most of the youth in the negligent throws of blooming independence, the family knit only briefly. Such is the way of family I guess.

This winter looks to be a tepid one as well. I am low on vacation time, so I probably won't be spending as much time as I would back in PA. Excuses excuses I know.

These last few weeks have been wearing me thin. Lots of travel, bereft of sleep, working hard at all angles. The strain on my back, the musculature itself, is nearly overwhelming. With so much going on, I put myself through the grind all over, but it feels and comes off as coming up short. But, wait. We've been here before. Lessons learned tell us that the best response is not to draw back into priority, but to rise to the occasion, to all occasions and make the very best of a rife harvest. I can't imagine what state this will put me in come January. But it's not my job to worry about those kinds of things anymore.

With gift giving comes gift getting. I'm having trouble with both this year. With most of my wish list filled well in advance of this holiday, it seems callous to want for more. There are certainly things that I want, and things I want to give, be assured.

But what I find myself yearning for, quite simply, is more time. More time in the day, more time to rest, more time to play, and more time to befriend, more time to get along with. The kind of time that is measured in forevers, in the aggregated eons spent on other people's couches, in the time and the miles and the words spent in between places. It seems to me that what is most enriching of life has sprouted from the gaps and gapes between the events cobbling our days and years together. It's not entirely true, but you might think that everything important happened on the way to something, and nothing of import took place once you got there. Then again, there are the parties, Vegas trips, late night diner runs, and many many a poker game to the contrary.

I'll check back on this from down the road, but it certainly seems an inflection point of sorts.

Damn, I think I just posted my over-the-shoulder New Years post early. Ohwell, I'm sure there's more to look back on.
