John Ashcroft fought for segregation in the Missouri Public School Districts when he was Attorney General of MO in 1976, and advocated reinstating it in 1984 when he was Governor of MO.
in 1984 Ashcroft called the St. Louis desegregation plan an "outrage against human decency." You may also remember in 1999 when he gave a commencement speech at Bob Jones University - where they forbid interracial dating.
And though I didn't remember his name, I do remember the event. He lost the 2000 Missouri Gubenatorial race to a dead man. The first time a dead man was elected to Congess in US history.
At his confirmation hearing in the Senate for US Attorney General, he had 42 dissenting votes (out of 100). More dissenting votes than any other US Attorney General nominee has received in history.

KENNEDY - JUDICIARY COMMITTEE EXECUTIVE BUSINESS MEETING ON THE CONFIRMATION OF SENATOR JOHN ASHCROFT FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL I am in awe .. first at the fact that there was still segregation in the public school systems in 1976 (shows how uninformed I am) and secondly that the man in charge of enforcing laws in our country not only opposed desegregation, but fought in the Federal court system to keep Missouri schools segregated. He was still fighting openly for segragation up through 1984.
I mean.. I knew he was a bit over the deep end, but this is almost surreal. I thought that before today I could honestly say that nothing I heard about him would suprise me. I was wrong.
