Buying Books...

Buying a book is more complicated than it would appear. Hannah, Kelso, Colin, and I all stayed after school for yesterday’s TGBG. We went to Dragon’s (well, Colin went to Friends’) for dinner, and afterwards we decided to stop at Newtown Bookshop. Somehow, we all ended up in the “Performance” section, and we see Richard III among Shakespeare’s various works. I get the BRILLIANT idea to buy it for Sandy and then have the entire cast and crew sign it (for those of you who don’t know, the lead male in TGBG, Elliot, is involved in an Off-Off-Broadway production of Richard III, and Sandy is our director.) So, we see there are two different covers, pick the prettier of the two, and buy the book. On the way back to the school, we search the book for the line “A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse!” so that we can bookmark it, seeing as it’s the recognizable line from RIII that’s uttered in TGBG. When we can’t find it, we check Sparknotes, and it tells us the line is in Act V Sc IV. We check, and can’t find the line AT ALL. Then Colin goes “Is this even Richard III?” Well, I check, and the next words out of my mouth are “Oh, shit. Guys, this is Richard II!!” So, then Colin and I run back to the bookstore and have to do a song and dance routine to be able to exchange the book. We get the right number of Richards, find the line, and then buy it, run to ZSW, and then back to school. We wrote a note on the title page:
“Sandy,
This isn’t an easy letter to write. So, we gave up. This is as good as it gets. Thanks for an incredible experience.
Love,
The Cast and Crew
of
“The Goodbye Girl”
May 4. 5. 6. 2006”

So, yes, we shamelessly quoted the show, but it was cute. Then the cast and crew signed it, and we gave it to Sandy before the show. Needless to say, she loved it. Especially after we recounted what we had to go through to get it.
