Professor Sprague,
I reget that time constraints didn’t allow for the face-to-face dialogue you suggested. I
teach discussion sections Tuesday mornings and have my own classes in the afternoon.
Thank you for taking the time to give me your perspective of the discussion. I understand that you
are making thoughtful choices both in the choice of subject matter and the handling of class discussion.
While I have a different recollection of class, I don’t think that precludes you or someone else from drawing different conclusions.
Ultimately, I think the most productive solution is to agree to disagree. I wasn’t calling for
censorship or trying to undermine your authority or scholarly standing. From my point of view, I was hurt and
disappointed by a perceived lack of balance and what looked to me like a dismissal
of queer theory. It may be that I misunderstood or that I am more sensitive to these issues than the average person. Regardless, I don’t think there is going to
be a meeting of the mind on this issue except to respectfully disagree.
Thank you again for wanting to invest the time and energy to respond to my concerns.
Maureen
