I got a turkey, like pretty much everyone else does round this time of year. BUT, here's the deal, I open the package up and there's this really weird looking brown fluid, not the thin wet red stuff you would normally see when there's fresh blood involved its kinda thick brown stuff, almost like thin gravy. ok, is the damn thing bad or not? it doesn't smell weird, it looks a little yellow, but I figure that's from that brown crap, so I rinse it off - as usual - and it seems better, the color was evidently from that brown stuff after all and now the turkey is all nice and pinkish white, as should be. so I put it in the roaster oven to cook, only even though there is no stink coming from the roaster, I'm still a little odd over this whole thing, still don't know if it went bad, it was frozen when I got it, it was frozen when I took it out to thaw, (in the fridge, of course) and it was still a little frozen around the neck n ass when I pulled it out of the packaging, never opened until today when I wanted to start cooking it. I checked for holes or other damage to the packaging, there were none, so I put it in to cook and its been about two hours (yea it wont be done until late tonight, but we all slept late) there's still about 2.5 hrs. to go if not 3, (its a 16 pounder) {for those across pond, about 1 stone 2} but I'm still concerned about it and that damn brown stuff that came out of the package.
I looked online, there are NO Sites that explain what the bird should look like, what rotten turkey looks/smells like or for that matter what the hell I should look for in a Good turkey. so I am at a total loss here! I've never seen anything like this before, but with all the crap they put in food these days and the fact that the normal person does not roast a whole frikkin turkey but once or twice a year I have no clue what I should or should not be concerned about, if it IS good or not. I normally buy free range, but that was not available this year for some reason. (???) .I always thought that when something was going bad there would be a strange smell to it, but I could be wrong, I rarely have anything go bad here, there just isn't enough food around to waste or forget about to have it go bad.
So, what does anyone out here think? Is the damn thing safe to eat or not?
Just to let you know, we are NOT going to eat the damned thing til I know for sure it is safe. We have opted for the simple toss off of spag n cheese w/ peas n corn. no fancy huge dinner for us, just the normal everyday stuff which we are ultimately very thankful for as is. I just need to know if I was given a rotten turkey or not. If I was, I will never get food there again! if not wtf was that weird brown crap pouring out of the package? I've never in my life seen anything like it and it was hard enough to try to describe here that it gave me a headache just trying to come up with something to compare it to!
Anyway, I hope the rest of you are having/have had a lovely thanks day, we are all doing fairly well and will continue to do so as long as I find out about that bird. I think I will just get it out of the roaster and throw it away, its giving me the creeps wondering about it. *eck*
Happy Turkey Day, y'all!
