Friday was my last day of work, as you may have noticed. The crazy hectic bit ended around 2, so I had a couple hours to breathe calmly, think logically, and tie up all the loose ends that I didn't think I'd have a chance to do. I even got away without having everyone stand around a disgusting cake telling me how much they'll miss me. I was walking around trying to say goodbye to the 6 people that I'll actually miss, but I kept getting accosted by people I barely say hi to. One of the secretaries was nearly in tears. After that, I ran off. I missed some of the important goodbyes.
Saturday I went to the French Quarter Festival with my aunt and uncle. It's been really fun living near them and getting to know them. It turns out I do have sane relatives after all. They've already decided to come visit me once I get settled in Van. Anyway, the best part of FQF is the food. Rather than rolling out crappy hot dog stands, real New Orleans restaurants (and caterers that you'd never otherwise get to try) set up tents and serve awesome food. Very delicious. On the music side of things, there were many traditional New Orleans brass bands and lots of jazz. There was also a very lively Afro-Brazilian band, complete with feathered dancer girls, and a really awesome French band. Not Cajun French, France French--they flew all the way over to play this weekend. I got their CD, so Robin, you'll have to translate for me.
This morning, I got up early, crammed all my stuff into my car, aaaaand didn't go anywhere. On my way back from New Orleans last night, one of the little lights on my dashboard lit up--right after my car spent 3 days in the shop getting overhauled. Since this is Mississippi, no mechanics are reachable on Sundays. Hopefully I'll get this sorted out tomorrow morning. Best case scenario: there's a bit of corrosion on the contact that's causing the light to blink at me and after knocking off the corrosion, I'll be on my way. Worst case scenario: the car won't make it to the mechanic tomorrow morning. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
