6/11/11 Occoquan Farmers' Market
This was my first time here, and that's always a big unkown, especially for
a "busking" gig. Farmers' markets can be really great or real busts and
anywhere in between. I like taking them on as gigs tho, because it's great
practice, I get to play outside, I often get tipped with produce (yum), it's
often exposure to a whole new group of people, (among which are inevitably
new friends waiting to be made) and well, you never know what can happen.
Farmers' market gigs are built for adventure!
So this one was alright. As for tips, I've done both better and worse.
The weather was a bit of a challenge, as a small summer shower came thru.
But I've played in the rain before, so no biggie. I had the guitar safe
in a big trash bag, and the banjo doesn't care what the weather is!
It passed quickly and everything dried up real fast.
I didn't get a chance to keep a real setlist for this. I played the
banjo the whole time. Here's what songs I do remember, in a sparse
resemblance to the order I in which I played them:
(Banjo)
Old Man
Rambling Rover
El Paso
The Big Rock Candy Mountain
Colours
Mary Ellen Carter
The Mermaid
Rainbow Connection

This was a slightly out of the ordinary appearance here on two counts: it
was on a Saturday and it was a lunch set. That didn't stop it from being
an excellent set and an excellent time. The patio was packed the entire
time and my efforts were well recieved. Lots of compliments!
And as always, my hosts fed me, and I now have a new addition to my list
of "best sandwiches EVER": a "Croque Madame"!

This turned out to be a very wide-ranging set in terms of style. No doubt
part of that is due to the fact that it was very well attended, especially
by a handful of folks who I don't usually see: some coming for the first
time in (decades?) and some coming for the very first time ever.
Turnout, actually was really excellent.
Thank you all!
A couple of other personal highlights:
-LOTS of excellent requests
-Playing a couple of songs that I've been highlighting at VARF that are kind
of new here
-"The Three Jovial Huntsmen"- I learned this song at VARF from my friends
in Threepenny Bit. It has room for self-generated verses, which I set to
with great gusto. I thought, initially that I wouldn't get to do it, as I
discovered that it somehow got mis-filed in my repertoire files and I
couldn't find it. But then I remembered that I'd written it (and my new
verses) in my "Everything Notebook", which was with me. So I got to do it.
One of the additional charms of this song is that it also has room for a
blast from a horn. Enter Lauretta, giving us mighty (funny) blasts on the
vuvuzela at these key moments. Hilarity ensued. This was a great debut!
The one lowlight was an apparently grumpy mic cable holding up the launch
for a couple of minutes.
