Howdy!
This is Doug, dressing up as Aly.
Aly's resting comfortably in a hospital bed with our new beautiful baby girl, but I figured she'd want everyone to hear the details.
Here's the stats:
Aly was hanging out at home, taking a bit of a rest, when her water broke at 3:50 pm on August 6th. Contractions began about 45 minutes later. Aly, her mom and I got some bags packed and drove to University MacDonald Womens' Hospital, which they were nice enough to place just a few minutes from our home.
We all celebrated when Aly get her epidural around 9 pm. I'll let her fill you in later on the events preceding that. For now, suffice it to say that she was plotting the deaths of several members of the hospital staff until her pain was adequately controlled.
After the epidural, we all got a little bit of sleep, interrupted every 5 to 15 minutes by nurses, technicians, medical students, residents, attendings, and people whose function we can only guess at coming in to turn on the lights, fiddle with equipment, and ask questions.
By about 1 am, Aly was fully dilated, and the pushing began.
Julia Corinne Miles was born August 7, 2004 at 03:08 AM Eastern Standard Time.
She surprised us by showing up nearly 2 weeks early.
She weighed in at 3.695 kg (8 lb, 2.4 oz), and 50 3/4 cm long (20"). Her head circumference was reported to be 36 cm. Apgars were 8 & 9.
She's huge, beautiful, and loud. She's got her dad's ears & nose, her mom's eyes & chin, and lots and lots of thick brown hair.
Her face is all wrinkly, but hey, she just got born. Her backside has already been likened to that of her paternal grandfather.
She and her mom both appear healthy.
Julia's been doing an awful lot of sleeping, but Aly's hardly slept at all since Friday morning. She's tired enough, but she just can't keep her hands off the beautiful new kid, and has been holding her and admiring her almost constantly since she was born. It's a beautiful thing to see.
Julia's face has unwrinkled a lot since she was born, and I swear her hair has already grown.
Anyway, Aly will have lots more to tell you in her own words when she gets back from the hospital Monday. If she can put Julia down long enough to log on.
But I know she wants to send her love to all y'all, and would love to hear from you.
BTW - we're posting pictures slowly but surely. Check out: http://users.adelphia.net/~jdmiles/baby
Take care.
