I'd heard about Heavenly Guardian a bit ago, about it being a spiritual successor to the
Kiki Kaikai games. While poking around the E-Tradepost the other day, I found a copy for the PS2 for under seven bucks so said, "What the hell." Then at the Mom House, I was finding all these reviews tearing it apart for graphics, mechanics, impossible enemies, the works. So later, with much trepidation, I gave it a try.
...I honestly wonder if any of those reviewers actually played Pocky & Rocky on the SNES. Cutesy it may have have been, but it was a pretty damned hard game; I loved it and I'm not even going to try and pretend it never pissed me the fuck off. And Heavenly Guardian is the same way.
I'm really enjoying HG, and not just for nostalgia's sake. Mind you, probably a lot of the appeal for me is the cast of youkai. I mean, I seriously cried, "It's a
tsuchinoko!" when one popped out of the bushes and attacked Sayuki, the yukionna MC. XD
And speaking of games and such, today whilst paying rent, I got into a discussion about games with my landlady Pat. Turns out she's a gamer herself, has been since the Atari, which she'd originally bought her son back in the day. We both traded stories about getting stared at in the game stores, and she of course gets it far worse than I do, since she's about 60. Once she'd been picking up one of the Silent Hill series, and the clerk tried to warn her about the content and stuff; I mean, that's part of the job, sure, in case it was intended as a gift or something, but he had the fucking arrogance to scoff when she said it was for her own use.
I said, "Well, hell! If I'd've known we could've been trading games all this time!" and I sent her off with Fatal Frame II to borrow.
And aside from that, I told Pat that I'm moving out at the end of August. Which honestly, was kind of hard. Other people complain about her, but these are the same fuckers who get shirty when she shows up at the first of the month to actually (*GASP*) collect the damned rent. But she wishes me well, and half joked that she's got two months to convince me to stay.
Unrelated, I now know more about sumo than I'm ever gonna need in life.
