China, 1640's or so.
So we've got a girl. Yu Xingzi, aged about 19 (probably really 17).
Her father is a fairly successful bookseller in Fujian (Fukien? Damn pinyin).
Her mother is the epitome of the perfect Lady of the House: cunning, caring, and not to be trifled with.
There is an older brother, Shing, who is to carry on the family business, and he's married to the cranky Mingyi.
Her carefree twin brother Xingshen was all for eduring Examination Hell, but was rather surprised when he exceeded his own expectations and may be getting an official government position for his efforts.
Xingzi's a fairly traditional girl (by the standards of her time), but being born into the household she has, she can read, and write (very little, mind you), and has become a bit of an amateur artist.
That's a start... The names are not set in stone, or is the style, I'll need to read up a little more. But this will be a fantasy, so I'm not going to kill myself over ZOMG HISTORICAL ACCURACY.
There are other characters in this thing that want attention Let's not even get onto the subject of the "actor" Hu Cong and her Victor/Victoria cross-dressing or the fact that she's being haunted by her sister Lien, but that's for later.
