You know, your childhood being killed hurts a lot more when a friend does it.
Actually, the more I think about it, the more I trust your review over my fond childhood memories (me and my friends call that the "Thundercats Experience"). So it's sad to hear the harsh truth, but better from you than anyone else.
Darkwing Duck was an important transition for me since it sorta steered me towards the superhero genre. I owned all eight figures as well as the Thunderquack and the Ratcatcher.
It's funny, though, because I still remember liking "Put out the Darkwing" and "Oh, a weisenheimer, eh?" as well as "It's plaaaaaaaaaaytiiiiiiiime!", so I liked the things you find annoying.
And I LOVED "Just Us Justice Ducks" simply because it's the first time I really saw a hero team-up scenario, and those death traps are cool, and I always loved seeing the checks and balances when it comes to those power sets. And also, any episode with Morgana instantly rules for me.
You're probably right, though, I'm sure when I look at those episodes again, the animation will be so awful I'll wonder why I ever liked it in the first place.
By the way, have you checked out Brad's latest movie review?
I STILL have all eight action figures and the Ratcatcher. They're in my bedroom right now.
And the show isn't honestly as bad as I said because even back then I knew the early episodes sucked and the show DEFINATELY improved as it went along. The latter episodes of the first syndicated season are actually really good and funny and the only reason I judge the early episodes so harshly is because they suck in comparison.
The concept of Just Us Justice Ducks is really cool but the execution was awful.
Really? The whole series just kinda runs together for me.
What do you think was the best Fatal Five (or whatever they were called) episode? The pirate one? The one where Negaduck steals their power? Or maybe the posiverse one?
The Best Fearsome Five Episode was the Alternate Universe episode Life, the Negaverse and Everything although to be honest that may actually be the best episode of the series (although I DO think Twin Beaks, Time and Punishment, and Dances With Bigfoot are serious contenders). The one where Negaduck steals the Fearsome Five's powers is good fun although the pirate one (Darkwing Dubloon) is REALLY bad. I think the good episodes that are coming up on future volumes will NOT hold up as well as say, Talespin simply because a LOT of cartoons have come and gone that have similar humor to Darkwing but actually perfected it. It seems like a lot of the good things from the later episodes were almost a work in progress as quite a few action/humor cartoon conceits started with Darkwing but were more successfully handled on other later series.
