Robin Hood 3x13 - the not as epic review post

Jun 27, 2009 16:08

This one's not quite as long, since I didn't go through the entire episode over again making notes. This is more just my thoughts after watching the episode twice. But, at least I'm posting earlier than I did last week (yay)!
Many spoilers... )

First, Robin dying of poison. That's just kinda wimpy. He must've wanted to die or something, 'cause in any other episode, they would've conjured up an antidote to it. [snip] Poison is much too wimpy of an end for Robin Hood.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but the oldest (I think; one of the oldest, at any rate) tradition about the death of Robin Hood is that he died when a duplicitous woman poisoned him. In many, if not most, of those traditions, she's actually a kinswoman of his, and I don't think you have to stretch the point too far to see Isabella as a kinswoman, given the relations between their parents. And I may be remembering this bit completely wrongly, but I think the poison was administered through a wound he received fighting the Sheriff's forces.

Hmm...that's interesting. I dunno, I had always envisioned Robin going down fighting.

yeah, I noticed the diff theme at the end too. I think they just took the recording of it & slowed down. As you said, it's usual 'triumphant'-ness would be a bit out-of-place right after a funeral-ish scene.

I agree that if Much were to take the lead for a hypothetical S4 (is there any definite word on a S4?) I could be tempted to watch it.... but I also have problems with letting things go.

Also, they've never bothered to change it in the past. No matter how dark the ending of previous episodes, it's always the same up-beat, triumphant theme. Even when Marian died, etc. But I guess Robin's death is more dramatic/traumatic/etc.

At Allan's funeral though, when Kate looked so shook-up and then snuck away from the gang because she couldn't take it anymore, I was wondering if she was secretly in love with Allan and this whole Robin thing was merely a facade. On peut rêver, n'est pas? (One can dream, right?)

I must say, I took it for boredom, but then I think I am the only girl for Allan :)

Just to clarify exactly which orc I was talking about, lol

Ah yes, that orc :) Good parallel!

Also, my mom pointed out that wouldn't using the Byzantine fire on the gate in the tunnel collapse the whole tunnel?

Oh yes, I was thinking that too. Hmm, well, it's not beyond the writers to put in something completely implausible to drive the plot, as we know!

It's like the writers say "You will die now. There is nothing anyone else can do, despite the fact that they've rescued people from the same situation repeatedly. We need you to die, so you will."Yes, that's true! With Allan last week, I couldn't believe that he'd just keep running in a straight line being shot... Damn ( ... )

I dunno. I think there's plenty of vengeance-seeking sh17-kicker potential to be had in Much, now. After all, this whole thing was precipitated by Prince John's attempt to seize the throne and he's still out there. Not only that, but Much has basically done nothing but follow Robin around everywhere his entire life, as far as we know. Now, he's sort of forced to find his own way. All of this seemed pretty portended in the last scene, with the whole "let's put our hands together all team-like" scene and he was hesitating. I think Much is suddenly being confronted by some very dark thoughts and there's a lot of story potential there.

It would be interesting if they followed the plot line of what Much did next now that Robin's gone. As I said, I would be tempted to watch then. However, I think they're more likely to pick up with Archer taking over for Robin, which, as much as Archer has grown on me, still wouldn't be worth watching.

Maybe it's me trying to see the good in everyone, but I don't think that Kate is heartless enough to be bored at a funeral. And we'll just have to have an epic fight-to-the-death over Allan...oh wait...

so I suppose there wasn't really anything Much could do, except obviously commit suicide, which might be a bit heavy for a family show. Good point. And more ammo for both Robin & Much to go out in a blaze of glory, some good old-fashioned teamwork and all that.

And thank you for posting it on TMR too
I thought I'd post there, seeing as much of my review concerned Much, but I was hoping nobody would complain that I mentioned killing him off.

Not that it matters who does what in S4 because the show is done now for me - they killed off all the good characters who've made the show great from the beginning (with the exception of Much and John).Robin's dead and gone and so the show is over. Doesn't matter what the producers do with it next season. It has to do with the whole "killing the soul of England" thing that was the reason they had to save King Richard in S2. Robin's dead, it's over. It's very final.

Exactly how I feel. I honestly don't think I could bring myself to watch a season 4.

Ah! Good ol' Gothmog! Glad to know I wasn't the only one who saw shades of him in Blamire! Fun fact, there is actually no indication in the books that Gothmog was an Orc.

Aw, crap. Ridiculous plot bunny attack.

Back on topic, though... I, too, loved the scenes with Much helping to lead the charge as we know he must have done in the Holy Land with Robin. The whole thing struck me as something that the writers and the crew had been itching to do since the show began and had never had the chance to until now. I've always wanted some Holy Land battle flashbacks, but alas, it looks like it will not happen, now.
