So, I went out for drinks with my friend Mike on Wednesday night. After a beer at the gay bar across the street from the office (destiny!), he decided to get on the subway and go downtown, and I went the other way to take a cab home. Fun night.
Then he didn't show up for work the next day. He didn't call anyone, and a call to his phone would only go straight to voicemail. This got more and more concerning as the day went on, until Bellevue Hospital called the main reception desk at our office at 3pm to let us know that they had a "Michael" who worked with us in their care. They would only give his name and say that he was in touch with his family - nothing more. Through a roundabout series of conversations with his sister, our department admin was able to gather that he had fallen while running to catch the subway, and that he had broken his femur and foot. He had been in the ICU for the majority of his hospitalization, and was having surgery that very afternoon to repair the injuries.
It was tough to hear. He was drunk when we split up. Not enough that I would have ever told him that he needed to go home, but just knowing that I was with him, and then he went out and this happened, made me feel really bad.
Then I got up yesterday morning and saw this video on CNN at 8am:
That would be Mike. I knew it was him because that was the shirt he was wearing when I was with him that night.
Ugh. He's going to be ok, but he has a really long recovery ahead of him. His leg got stuck, then the train started to move, so there's a lot of damage to his leg. He lost a lot of blood, and they had to repair a lot of arteries in his surgery. But, we heard today that he's stabilized and had his breathing tube removed, so that's all good.
Anyway, that's been fun to deal with.
Lots of other updates I need to write about. If only to preserve them as memories. Going to try to get to that this weekend/early this week.
