First off, if anyone would like to read the article that is the basis of my artifact, any comments on it would be very helpful. The link is
http://www.time.com/time/personoftheyear/2004/story.html I don't know how to make that a link, but that is the address. The portion of my paper that I am having trouble with is:
Hodge and Kress have gone along with this train of thought, stating that “Societies manifest power structures between the dominant and repressed groups, and dominant groups craft discourse communication in order maintain and sustain these power structures.” I don’t think it is in doubt, given the portrayal of Bush in this article, that TIME magazine is actively reinforcing this power structure. This goes back to the commercial I am thinking of using, which states that TIME’s person of the year, ‘wasn’t a terrorist, it wasn’t a filmmaker, it was a president.’ With language such as this, it seems evident that TIME magazine is attempting to cast opposition to the president as fruitless and menacing. How exactly are Bin Laden and Moore related, other than that they oppose the President? The two do not deserve to be linked together, and in doing so TIME/CNN seek to cast opposition to the president as immoral.
Also, this is a story I heard on NPR a while ago:
Vice President Dick Cheney was giving a speech in New Mexico. A photographer asked Cheney if she could take his picture, to which he responded by asking her what race she was. When she refused to tell him, he refused to allow the picture.
If anyone remembers this happening or has any details, I would appreciate this. I know that this was an actual occurrence, but I can't find any information about it no matter how hard I try. If anyone has any tips for searching for stuff like this, that would be helpful too.
Any comments will be useful.
