UK and Musical Memories

I'm going to the UK next week! I'll be vacationing for 10 days and catching two of the Morrissey shows in London. One of the bands I represent, Tiger Army, is supporting Moz over there for four weeks. Incredible, incredible, incredible!

I just realized I have 27 days worth of music on my external hard-drive. I mean, what if I just started at the begining (2Pac) and listened straight through to the end (Asian characters from "Kill Bill" soundtrack).

For now I'm sticking with iTunes "party shuffle." Next 15 songs:

Marty Friedman, "Be"
Former guitarist for Megadeth; he has made some Yanni like solo albums...

The Misfits, "Violent World"
You may have noticed I like the Misfits.

Judge, "Give It Up"
The best hardcore show I ever saw was Judge, Integrity, Edgewise and Endpoint at the Zodiac in Louisville, KY in 1990 or 1991. I remember over-hearing Porcell telling the rest of his band as they decided their set list that the only part he likes about "Give It Up" is the beginning and I think about that every time I hear this song.

Billy Idol, "The Dead Next Door"
My favorite singer in the 5th grade (nearly tied with Adam Ant) and still a favorite. I used to do lots of lip-synching and air-guitar. And I actually got to interview him, and his longtime guitarist/ co-songwriter Steve Stevens, at their rehearsal space (and watch them practice!) for an MTV News piece a couple of years ago. Unfortunately it was for a piece about Eminem and 50 Cent that asked questions like, "Who is Scarier?" with Freddy Krueger answering, "Who has better fashion?" with Carson from "Queer Eye," and alas... "Who's a bigger rebel?" with Billy Idol. A 45 minute interview for two second throwaway soundbyte. Ah, the blessing and the curse of that job... Still, well worth it. For me, anyway.

Judas Priest, "Breaking The Law"
I will always think of Beavis & Butthead. PRIEST!

The Haunted, "Who Will Decide"
I still love that first album to pieces.

Count Basie, "Shoe Shine Boy"
I pose so hard with all of this jazz music. Someday I'll explore and really LISTEN.

Boysetsfire, "Outro"
Wind-Up Records could have done so much with this band...

Rain Like The Sound Of Trains, "Puzzled States"
Amazing forgotten Dischord band from the mid'90s. Their single album will always take me back to 1994 and my friend Ben Shine, who got the singer to write, on looseleaf paper, some of the lyrics to an obscure demo song which I have folded up inside my copy of their CD.

108, "Mantra Six"
Speaking of 1994, I roadied for these guys for a week in 1994. Or maybe it was 1993? Hmm... One of my favorite bands of all time. A lot of stories I could tell right now... But maybe another day. I missed their recent reunion shows.

Obituary, "Gates To Hell"
Never really "got" into this band; recently uploaded them into the iTunes.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, "Abattoir Blues"
I think of Dan Weyandt from Zao when I hear Nick Cave. And I think about managing Missing Link Records in Indianapolis in 1997 and falling in love with "Boatman's Call." I want to see that movie he wrote with Guy Pearce!

The Who, "Music Must Change"
I bought "Who Are You" at a Tower Records in Nashville, TN in 1993 and I just took the shrink-wrap off YESTERDAY. Crazy, huh?

King Diamond, "The Wedding Dream"
I will always think about telling my English teacher in 10th grade about King Diamon's "Them" and loaning him a copy of the cassette.
